Budget approach to high-reduction-ratio gearboxes

A Drive Lines Technologies product story

Drive Lines Technologies has successfully designed planetary gearboxes with reduction ratios up to 7000:1 using basically standard components to minimise cost.

Drive Lines Technologies has successfully designed planetary gearboxes with reduction ratios up to 7000:1 using basically standard components to minimise cost.

In one particular application, the direction of rotation was one-way and gearbox backlash was not a significant factor.

A high-pressure slurry jet nozzle, cutting a 600mm-diameter hole in 60mm-thick steel plate, was required to rotate through a full revolution in around 4 hours.

The selected hydraulic motor produced 7200 revolutions in the 4-hour period.

Combining two virtually standard IMS planetary gearboxes, with ratios of 308:1 and 22:1, provided an overall reduction ratio of just under 6800:1.

The resulting nozzle rotation speed was 0.026rev/h - or one revolution every 3.75 hours.

Six systems have been supplied.
