Tiny-but-tough tag for industrial mobile micro PC

A Dolch Computer Systems (UK) product story

The VersaPAC micro industrial computer has been specifically developed for in-vehicle and onboard applications in the automotive and defence sectors.

The VersaPAC micro industrial computer has been specifically developed for in-vehicle and onboard applications in the automotive and defence sectors, as well as in the fields of industrial automation, food and drink production, the oil, gas and chemical industries, and outdoor entertainment and multimedia systems.

Microsoft Windows XP is pre-installed as standard, though Windows ME, 98, 2000 and NT can be installed instead if required.

With this choice of operating system, the variety of potential applications is truly staggering.

Furthermore, while the computer usually runs from a 10-32V DC supply, there is an optional integral battery and charger that allows one hour of operation without the need for any external power source.

An innovative passive cooling system is employed (for which a patent application has been submitted) rather than a conventional fan, and this helps to keep the VersaPAC compact, extremely quiet (less than 25dB), and highly reliable (the only moving parts are in the 2.5in EIDE 20Gbyte hard disc drive).

The novel temperature control system also ensures that the VersaPAC will operate in any ambient temperature from 0 to +50C (-40 to +60C as an option), and the device can be stored in temperatures ranging from -40 to +70C.

As an indication of how tough the VersaPAC is, it will withstand being dropped from a height of almost 1m onto concrete.

With a weight of less than 3kg, dimensions of only 280 x 160 x 66mm, and sealing to IP54 as standard (IP65 is an option), the computer is ideal for installing within vehicles where there are space and/or weight constraints.

In addition, a CAN-V2.0 interface is included so that the VersaPAC can communicate directly with other in-vehicle systems; alternatively, the CAN bus can be used to connect remote I/O modules.

Users can also install one Type III or two Type II PCMCIA cards and there is a further Type III CompactFlash slot for a memory card or miniature hard drive.

The Port Replicator at the rear of the computer provides access for up to four RS232 serial ports, mouse, keyboard, a USB port (another is accessible from the front of the VersaPAC), a parallel port and a VGA monitor output.

Audio ports (line in, line out and microphone) are also provided, and there is a facility for plugging a headset into the front of the unit.

A further communications option is provided as standard in the form of a FireWire (IEEE1394) port that is accessible from the front of the unit.

If more I/O is required, the VersaPAC Plus offers eight digital inputs, eight digital outputs, and eight 0-10V analogue inputs.

This version also benefits from three counter inputs, an input for reading speedometer data, and an ISO7816-compatible Smartcard reader.

A wide range of optional devices can be added, including a GPS module, a GSM/GPRS module (and a headset that allows voice-over communications), a TV/radio tuner module, various wireless and sunlight-readable displays, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and industrial keyboards with integrated touchpads - in various language formats.

The VersaPAC has been designed and developed by Dolch and is manufactured on its behalf by Digital-Logic, the Swiss-based specialist designer, developer and manufacturer of boards and custom embedded computer systems.

An exclusivity agreement will ensure that the VersaPAC is only available through Dolch, and the device will benefit from the company's comprehensive global customer support.
