Tough boasts for ultra-rugged computers
One manufacturer claims to be able to supply computing equipment that is tough enough to withstand the daily abuse of any environment in any industry.
Displays take harsh environments in their stride
The RuggedTouch is a robust touchscreen, while the RuggedTouch Plus combines the display features of the RuggedTouch with a rear-mounted computer.
Industries that can benefit from the new SafeTTouch EX Plus include food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, oil and gas production, petrochemicals, steel smelting, and many others where explosive or flammable atmospheres are present, or where the operating conditions are exceptionally harsh.
The SafeTTouch EX Plus has a cast-aluminium housing with an extremely tough touchscreen that carries a five-year warranty.
Featuring the Dolch proprietary enhanced infra-red technology that is immune to surface damage such as chips or scratches, the 15in XGA touchscreen can be operated by users wearing gloves or holding a stylus, and the system maintains its calibration over time, never drifting or losing sensitivity.
Because the enhanced infra-red technology does not use overlays or electromagnetic fields, it is entirely safe in hazardous areas.
Furthermore, the image clarity from the bright, sharp, high-resolution active matrix colour TFT LCD screen is never compromised.
In addition to resisting hazardous fumes and atmospheres, the SafeTTouch EX Plus is also designed to operate in ambient temperatures from 0 to +40C (optionally -25 to +45C) and will resist shock and vibration.
Housed within the rugged enclosure is an Intel Pentium 266MHz processor with 256Mbyte of memory and hard disc of at least 20Gbyte.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional is preinstalled as standard and there is a 10/100Base-T Ethernet connection.
Customers have the choice of an AC or DC power inlet.
