A new range of test rigs provides rigorous performance testing of power transmitting belts for automotive applications.

Performance testing of power transmitting belts demands that they are studied under conditions of rated belt speeds and rated tension values continuously over a time period, long enough to stabilise their aging characteristics In some cases where it is required to study the fatigue limits, the testing period may prolong for many hours of running

A test bench to validate the design limits of performance therefore, needs to be capable of running the belts under adjustable power transmitting conditions and adjustable wrap angles around tension sensing and idling pulleys of specified diameters.

High-end test rigs from Dynaspede are designed and manufactured to perform endurance testing of belts at elevated temperature under three- or four-pulley configurations.

AC regeneration of braking energy forms the concept behind the loading arrangement.

These test rigs are designed to perform endurance testing of belts under following conditions: adjustable belt tension; with angles of 90 degrees around the tensioning and idler pulleys wrap angles of 180 degrees around the driving and loading pulleys; with adjustable speeds up to 5000rev/min; and with belt loading under dynamic conditions to transmit the specified belt power on a continuous duty basis.

The test rig includes: a heating chamber which surrounds the belt under test; adjustable speed and torque controls (regenerative) for driving and loading of the belt; spindles - supporting the driving, driven and tension pulleys, engineered for high-speed operation and overhang loads; and a motorised belt tensioning arrangement to ensure that the specified belt tension is applied based on tension feedback from a load cell attached to the tensioning roller.

A PC-based control system serves all the control needs of the test bench.

The system automates all cyclic sequencing with dynamic control of load on the driven pulley, speed of the driving pulley, belt tension, belt temperature and chamber temperature.

All fault conditions are displayed on the man-machine interface unit (MMI) located on the face of the panel.
