Geared motors come clean for food and
beverage
A new range of geared motors aims to clean up in the demanding food and beverage industry.
Because of a highly critical need for hygiene, exacerbated by ambient factors such as humidity, belt lubricants and corrosive cleaning agents, the food and beverage industry is one of the most demanding of its equipment suppliers In answer to those needs, Danfoss Bauer has developed the 2000 range of geared motors especially for use in such demanding situations

Connection technology cuts motor setup time
From April 2002, all Danfoss Bauer geared motor units up to 2.2kW will be supplied fitted with innovative Cage Clamp connection technology which reduces connection time and costs by up to 75%.
The IP 65 enclosure features bevelled edges on all the housing surfaces, facilitating thorough cleaning and the drain-off of liquid cleaning residues.
CORO2 alkali and acid resistant paint finish is used over the entire assembly and an IP66 enclosure with CORO3 finish is available as an option for applications where particularly aggressive cleaning agents are employed.
Although worm gears tend to be selected for conveyor applications, Danfoss recommend bevel gears for the application.
Not only are worm boxes are up to 30% less efficient than bevel boxes, for smooth running bevel boxes offer the best solution.
The introduction of PET bottles and other very lightweight containers has given rise to increasing problems at low speeds.
Precisely when conveyors most need smooth regulation, as the conveyor is run up to speed, the poor performance of worn worm gears leads to self locking and hence jerky bottle transport, with containers falling over and reducing the production efficiency of the system as a whole.
Bevel gears offer much smoother transport characteristics at low speed and smoother start/stop conditions.
The higher efficiency of the bevel box, combined with higher breakaway torque means that most often a smaller power drive can be selected for the application without sacrificing breakaway torque.
Although conveyors are almost always operated at less than full load, dried-on belt lubricants or beverage residues means that maximum breakaway torque is required at startup and bevel gears offer this at lower running cost.
The new 2000 range of bevel geared motor units, designed with corrosion resistant finishes and IP 65 enclosures to meet the hygiene demands of the food and beverage industries undoubtedly offers the best technical solution for variable speed operation in conveying applications.
