Passive drive filters for harmony with
standards
Two new passive filters for Danfoss VLT series drives will ensure compliance with the majority of international requirements.
Increasingly stringent legislative standards including IEEE519-1992, EN61000-3-2, the future EN61000-3-12 and in the UK, G5/4, have increased worldwide demand for an improvement in harmonic filtering beyond what is possible with AC or DC chokes within variable speed drives themselves Although as standard, all Danfoss VLT frequency convertors have built-in DC-link chokes, reducing the harmonics typically by a factor of two, this in itself is frequently no longer sufficient to ensure compliance with today's increasingly demanding harmonics standards

Two new passive filters which will ensure compliance with the majority of international requirements, are being launched onto the global market by Danfoss to complement its VLT ranges of drives.
The new Danfoss AHF 005 and AHF 010 units are advanced harmonic filters - not to be compared with traditional harmonic trap filters - and have been specially designed to match Danfoss VLT frequency convertors.
The AHF005 will provide suppression down to 5% harmonic currents (THiD) which make them comparable with the performance of 18-pulse solutions.

Comprehensive coverage of geared motor units

The AHF 010 provides suppression down to 10% harmonic current which makes them in most cases better than 12-pulse solutions.
Recognising that the perfect three-phase supply voltage is nearly non-existent, the new harmonic filters are developed in such a way that they ensure values close to or better than 10% THiD or 5% THiD even if the pre-existing total harmonic voltage distortion (THvD) of the supply voltage is 2% or the voltage imbalance is 2%.
Their high impedance makes their performance data less dependent on other parameters, such as supply transformer characteristics and cable lengths.
Comparing this performance with traditional 12- or 18-pulse rectifier solutions, the new Danfoss filters are less complex, more reliable, more compact and certainly more cost effective than 12- or 18-pulse drives.
Their application is simplified with a three-wire in/out installation.
One filter module can be used to support several drives, and multiple filters can be employed to support higher-current drive installations.
The filters are compact enough to be suitable for mounting in the same enclosures as the drives themselves.
In view of the tightening of standards, these filters will be warmly welcomed by concerned drives users becoming increasing confused by the tightening demands.
To help further, Danfoss is also offering a benchmark report on current standards and the performance of passive filters compared with 12- and 18-pulse drives.
