Danfoss launched its new VLT AutomationDrive FC300 to UK trade buyers at last week's Total show The FC300 sets a new standard for AC drives, being in effect a one-stop shop for the widest possible range of drive applications from simple speed control to high dynamic motion control, in a single package

The drive was developed only after close consultation with a drives user group, who expressed strong opinions as to the performance and physical characteristics of the drive they would themselves design if given the chance.

The FC300 meets almost all of their requirements and is already in full production to meet demand.

Reliability, flexibility, intelligence and user-friendliness were all high priorities which Danfoss has built into the new drive series.

Danfoss has always enjoyed a strong reputation for reliability, having launched the world's first production AC drive, the VLT 5, well ahead of the field, in 1968.

Thermal management is critical, as is low component count, and Danfoss has addressed both in this new drive.

A rigid aluminium frame, with forced cooling, forms the main structure of the drive and facilitates cold-plate cooling.

Intelligent thermal monitoring ensures that cooling fans are only activated if temperatures rise, in addition to waveform control in the event of increased ambient temperatures.

Intelligence covers not only the drive's protection and mechanisms but also the motor control protocols.

Motor torque, speed and position can all be closely controlled right up to servo performance, including a close synchronisation capability.

PLC functionality to IEC61131-3 is also built into the unit, negating the need for external control PLCs in many cases.

Flexibility of the FC300 is at an all-time high.

The six-line display on the demountable control pod can be programmed to read in any of four standard languages with others available on request, including Chinese.

RS485 is standard and most of the major fieldbus protocols are offered as options.

Automatic motor adaptation means that whatever AC motor is used, its performance and efficiency are optimised.

User friendliness means that the FC300 can be "field stripped" if necessary.

When the unit was launched to Danfoss's Drives Solutions Partners, the delegates were given a kit of parts and they successfully built their own drives from scratch.

The flexibility of terminal allocation means that the drive is backward compatible with previous VLT models and child's play to install, commission, program and operate.

A single drive model to control a whole production line means fewer spares, common setup and operating philosophy and fast interchange if problems present themselves.

The FC300 is also future-proofed by the optional provision of Bluetooth communication, capable of connecting the drives to the Internet for remote monitoring.

The AutomationDrive FC300 represents a bold quantum leap in AC drive technology, designed for drives users, by drives users and the world's leading AC drive manufacturer.
