1. Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

I don't want this to seem like it's a discussion newsletter
about exhibitions, but they certainly seem to be much in the
news at the moment. After we broke the news last week about
the cancellation of the C&I (Control & Instrumentation)
Exhibition, which was to have been held at the NEC from 9-11
May, organiser Centaur has announced it is launching "a far
more strategic event" in May 2001, called Integrated
Manufacturing Solutions. "As such", the company says, "we
have decided to withdraw C&I 2000 Exhibition from the market
in order to better concentrate on an event that the market
supports." Meanwhile, following the news of the move of
Drives and Controls and OSPMA-Fieldcomms to the Excel venue
in London, information has reached us that another exhibition
organiser is stepping into the gap by running its own
competitive show in Telford next year from 13 to 15 March,
creating a bit of a head-to-head.
A long awaited shake-out, as the exhibition heads off
competitors such as the internet? Or symptoms of the dying
throes of the trade exhibition itself? We shall see.

2. Omron and Rockwell Form Strategic Relationship

Industrial automation market giants Omron and Rockwell
Automation have reportedly entered into global technical and
product cooperation. Initial emphasis of the relationship
will be placed on "developing, adopting, and promoting common
technologies that simplify applications and improve the
performance of industrial automation systems". It is known
that Rockwell Automation will provide significant technical
assistance to Omron, resulting in rapid adoption of open
standard technologies such as DeviceNet, ControlNet and the
recently announced Ethernet/IP (Industrial Protocol) into the
Omron automation architecture. In addition, Omron will
aggressively promote these open standard technologies into
its core markets. Also, the companies will work together to
improve connectivity between their respective application
software suites through open technologies like OPC (OLE for
Process Control) and the Rockwell Software automation
software components.

3. Toshiba wrongfoots the press

We reported previously that Toshiba's Automation and
Instrumentation Division is changing its marketing plans, by
connecting a number of Master Distributors directly to its
head office in Tokyo. In the UK, the Master Distributor will
be TM Technology, based in Hayes, Middlesex, and just a few
miles down the road from the current Toshiba London office in
West Drayton. Since that announcement Toshiba has contacted
us (as the fastest and most pro-active engineering medium!)
to let it be known that all other Toshiba companies remain as
subsidiary companies in the UK and Toshiba International
still remains active at its London Headquarters. An
impression had inadvertently been given via the original
press release that Toshiba has entirely left its London
headquarters, which is not the case.

*** WEB ACCESS NOT NECESSARY! ***

I hope you find this issue of the Engineeringtalk Newsletter
useful. With over 3000 engineers and other industry
professionals already on the circulation, you're in at the
start of something which we think is going
to be really big. In addition to the new products, news and
ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website
http://www.engineeringtalk.com and dozens more being added
daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web
access! All the full stories behind the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone:
see details below. We're also developing systems to enable
you to search our entire supplier news archives by email too
- more news on this each week.
In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we
might make Engineeringtalk better, email me directly.
Best wishes

4. Data Acquisition built on Visual Basic

Softwire, a new graphical programming tool for
building data acquisition applications, is the
first software of its kind to use
industry-standard Visual Basic code. Combining the
speed and simplicity of graphical programming with
the power and flexibility of text-based
syntactical routines, Softwire makes it easy to
incorporate custom Visual Basic routines into any
application. An innovative 'try before you buy'
distribution system lets users obtain the software
on CD free of charge, then contact UK suppliers
Adept Scientific for an unlock code to extend use
beyond the 30-day trial period.

5. Full compliance measurement to IEC61000-3-2 & 3-3

As from 1 Jan 2001, EMC conformity will include
the requirement to comply with limits on mains
harmonics and flicker imposed on the mains by the
product. Many modern electronic and electrical
products draw current from the mains in a very
non-linear manner, inevitably creating harmonic
signals. These distort the mains voltage and
create problems for the supply and distribution
networks. Given that the numbers of electronic
devices connected to the mains seems set to ever
increase, control of the harmonic emissions is an
obvious requirement. The AC2000 Harmonic and
Flicker analyser from Laplace enables simple and
automated testing to the standards.

6. Trident And API Motion Join Forces In UK

Trident Engineering, the Berkshire-based small DC
motor specialist, has been appointed as the major
UK stockist and distributor for API Motion as part
of a strategic working partnership set up between
the two companies. Formerly API Portescap, API
Motion makes an extensive range of small ironless
rotor motors, stepper motors, brushless DC motors,
iron core motors and spur and planetary gearheads.

7. New encoders for the motion industry

Significant new developments to Renishaw's open,
non-contact, encoder system include a 360degree
high resolution rotary encoder, linear encoders
based on 40 micron pitch scale, and a versatile XY
planar encoder. The RGH41 linear encoder system
operates with Renishaw's new 40 micron pitch flexible
scale, and will shortly operate with industry-standard
40 micron chrome/glass etched scale, making it
suitable for a wide range of motion applications.

8. Profibus International surprised by patent ruling

Recent news that patents without declarations of
assignment are to be imposed on fieldbus protocols
that are standardised within IEC and Cenelec has
surprised Profibus International. Standards
affected by manufacturers' patents must normally
be listed fully in the Standard and made available
to everyone on fair and equal conditions. A check
carried out among Profibus International members
confirms that all claims have been assigned to the
standards organisations on the required
conditions. Profibus International is now checking
to see whether there are any patents held by
non-members that may affect Profibus.

9. Adhesive performs in severe environments

Severe environment adhesive 4505 is the latest
Symonds Cableform structural adhesive, specially
developed to perform under severe environmental
conditions. It can withstand up to 205fC
continuously - 230fC for 30 minutes during one
paint bake cycle - and is resistant to immersion
in boiling and salt water, petrol, common oils,
solvents and most chemicals.
