from our suppliers off our chests (and as many readers pointed out,
most of us are suppliers as well as customers, so there was something
for everyone to learn last week!). Now it's the turn of suppliers to
say what they want from their customers (well, you didn't think I was
going to ignore all those emails from suppliers, did you?).
Here's my favourite list, which came from an automation systems
supplier. "What we'd like from our customers is..." + A decent
and accurate specification of what they actually require; +
Realistic terms of payment with a decent deposit; + No requests
for discounts on bespoke turnkey projects as if they were sacks of
potatoes; + Not waiting until the last minute to place their
order and then expecting the machine to be produced in a week
like a rabbit from a hat; + Not to ask for extras on the machine
or an increase in the specification and then be offended when you dare
suggest that they might like to pay for it; + Not changing the
specification just as the machine is about to go out of the door; + To make sure they order enough training for their staff; + To
make sure that staff are not being interrupted every 5 minutes when
they are being trained; + To clean and maintain the machine
properly; + To install and use the remote support software
provided; and + Not to find some spurious excuse to avoid paying
the last 10% invoiced.!
Is that a chorus of approval I hear
from other suppliers?

======================================================= OUR TOP
TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= 1. Big
claims for integrated motion solution With the launch of
Kinetix, its new "integrated motion solution", Rockwell Automation
reckons it is set to shake up the traditional world of motion control.
Always something of a "black art" because of its perceived complexity,
motion control involves five key elements - control, networks, drives,
motors and actuation - plus mechanical, electrical and software
engineering disciplines. Until now, customers have been happy to use
their skill and knowledge to shop around for components spanning these
control elements and put the system together themselves. Ultimately,
though, this is complex, time consuming and expensive. Now, the
Kinetix solution offers the five key elements, all designed to work
together to provide an elegant solution that works first time. Worth
investigating.

bearings turn the tables on accuracy Loadpoint Bearings
now has what it says is a revolutionary range of air bearing rotary
tables employing a new design of direct drive system to achieve
"previously unattainable levels of resolution" on angular position -
better than 0.00002 degrees. This level of accuracy means that the
rotary tables are ideally suited to demanding tasks such as dicing
silicon wafers and high precision grinding and machining operations.
Developed originally for Loadpoint's own use - and proven in trials on
the company's own dicing machines - the rotary tables are believed to
be the first commercially available product of their type to integrate
a direct drive motor.

Valve-regulated batteries save backup space A new line of
valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries is claimed to offer
superior performance while occupying less space than conventional
standby power batteries. The new EnerSys Datasafe HR series of high
rate discharge batteries are ideal for uninterruptible power supply
(UPS) and other applications that require maximised space usage
combined with high energy density. Pricing for an HR205 Datasafe
battery starts at $180 each.

Coupling eliminates cross connection Staubli has a new
coupling that offers a number of significant and worthwhile benefits
on connection systems for all types of fluids. The new HCB coupling is
compact and has a flush faced non-spill design, preventing any air
inclusion in the system when connecting as well as avoiding spillage
on disconnection. The bayonet locking system, just push and twist,
provides a safe, quick and reliable connection that is also suitable
for high vibration applications. A bayonet locking mechanism is
available either in the standard configuration or with four
differently positioned colour-coded locking lugs on the plug that can
only be connected to the specific matching socket. The standard socket
(or plug) cannot be connected to any of the four special keyed plugs
(or sockets). This provides five different connector configurations
where each one will only connect to the partnering plug or socket,
eliminating any chance of cross connection.

Switches protected against vandals and weather Schurter's
latest Metal Line switches and keypads are protected against both
rough environmental conditions and vandalism. The MCS 19 Metallic is a
single switch with a very flat front side to reduce the likelihood of
damage, and its stainless-steel surface is ideal for outdoor
applications. The actuator or the switch housing can be varnished
according customer colour specifications. Red, green and yellow are
available as standard signal colours.

Valves at home with gas or fluid The new enhanced Amot
22000 series stainless-steel control valve suits both pneumatic and
hydraulic control systems, thanks to a ported exhaust feature. This
increases versatility and reduces the inventory required by system
integrators and end-users that have traditionally required separate
hydraulic and pneumatic control valves. Typical applications include
wellhead, compressor, pump and safety control systems.

Compact supply for industrial conversion The FP-PS4-050E
is a new compact power supply from Matsushita Electric Works.
Measuring just 115 x 42 x 75mm, the unit can reliably supply 2.1A of
current at 24V DC from a 240V AC input. The PSU has a peak-to-peak
ripple voltage of less than 240mV, and short circuit, overvoltage and
overload protection are all featured on the device. With an input
voltage range of 85 to 265V AC, the supply caters for all input
variances and allows global use, with a list of approvals including
CE, EN and UL/cUL.

tensioning device prolongs conveyor life Spiroflow's Aero
mechanical conveyors work by using a looped wire rope with evenly
spaced polyurethane discs moving at high speed through a steel tube to
create a moving air stream that conveys a wide range of materials,
with minimal product degradation or separation and clean dust-free
operation. Now the company has developed an automatic tensioning and
monitoring system that increases the working life of the rope
operating by up to 40%. Reducing maintenance time and costs, the
tensioning device monitors the load placed on the rope and constantly
manipulates the conveyor to ensure that the correct tension is
applied. High throughput rates of up to 120t/h are maintained, without
loss of capacity, when elevating material at any angle from a
ground-level feed hopper to heights of up to 25m.

Diamond spreads the heat From the electronics
manufacturing sector, Morgan Advanced Ceramics tells us that its
latest Diamonex CVD diamond heat spreaders are ideal for high power
device applications, such as laser diodes, microwave FETs and MMICs,
and advanced multichip modules (MCMs). Due to diamond's extremely high
thermal conductivity, Diamonex CVD diamond heat spreaders improve
performance by reducing junction temperatures, allowing for increased
power output, speed, and reliability. Recent studies show a 50%
reduction in thermal resistance compared with CuW and 25-40C drop in
junction temperatures compared to copper heat spreaders.

graphics panels take on PLC protocols Pro-face UK has
released a pair of new graphics display panels: the GP2500L 10.4in
monochrome display, and the GP2500S 10.4in STN colour unit. These
displays have all the powerful features of the company's GP2000 series
operator interfaces, yet with cost effective display technologies. As
with all the Pro-face GP units, they still use the popular GPPRO/PB3
editor software, now on V6.0. This software provides the protocols for
over 100 PLCs worldwide so that the displays can be used with a wide
variety of controllers.
