Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
It's been reported in the
last hour or so that Ford is to close the famous Brown's Lane Jaguar
plant in Coventry, as part of continued cost-cutting by the automotive
giant. If true, this would be terrible news for 1,600 employees there,
as well as many suppliers. According to a Birmingham Post reporter -
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y18152266 - it's already been
decided in Detroit that there's one too many Jaguar manufacturing
plants, and Brown's Lane has not been getting the investment seen at
Halewood or Castle Bromwich.
It's unfortunate too that, if
it's happened, the decision was made with Sir Nick Scheele in charge
at Ford as chief operating officer running the global automotive
business. Scheele is of course a Brit who ran Jaguar for seven years
and who has been credited with rescuing the marque. I'll be reading
the comments in the automotive press with particular interest in the
next week or two.

TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION =======================================================
[1] ULTRACLEAN STEEL FOR DIESEL FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS (Corus,
27 October 2003)
A new range of extremely clean steels will
help manufacturers of the latest generation of diesel fuel injection
systems meet the growing demand from carmakers for improvements in
performance, fuel efficiency and cost. Key benefits of Corus's clean
steels for diesel injectors include a consistent heat treatment
response and excellent machinability, to meet the demands of the high
injection pressures present in the close tolerance gun-drilled holes
of the fuel delivery system. In the case of steels for injector
nozzles, Corus products exhibit extremely high cleanness, consistent
hardenability and increased fatigue resistance, which importantly,
help improve the life expectancy of diesel injector components.

[2] SMARTCARDS ARE THE KEY TO CONFIGURABLE SAFETY (Pilz
Automation Technology, 27 October 2003)
The PNOZmulti is a
novel, software-configurable safety controller for all safety
functions in applications up to BS EN954-1 Category 4. It is designed
for medium-complexity machinery for which conventional
electromechanical relays or microprocessor-based electronic safety
relays are unsuitable, and where the use of programmable safety
systems would be excessive. PNOZmulti is as simple to use as a
traditional PNOZ electromechanical relay, with drag-and-drop
configuration software that needs no specialist programming skills.
Furthermore, the modular nature of the controller means that the
customer only has to purchase and install the required functionality,
thereby saving both costs and cabinet space. Using the modules already
available, customers can employ a PNOZmulti controller for safety
related control systems with emergency stop switches, gate switches,
limit switches, light curtains, safety mats and two-handed starts.
More modules are planned for launch in the near future.

[3] STAINLESS-STEEL TIES FOR TOP TENSILE STRENGTH (Panduit, 27 October 2003)
A revolutionary new stainless
steel cable tie design claims the world's highest rated ratio of loop
tensile strength to tie width. The new, enhanced locking head
construction means the ties now boast loop tensile strengths of 890,
1112 and 2000N for respective widths of 4.6, 6.4 and 7.9mm,
representing an increase of 80-100% on the closest market equivalents.
The new design also features a novel self-locking mechanism with a low
thread force, so installation is quick, secure and effortless.

[4] SMALLER PACKAGE FOR AC FLUX VECTOR DRIVE (Danaher
Motion: Thomson (USA), 27 October 2003)
The Seco SV3000 AC
adjustable speed flux vector drive performs like a DC drive but is
equally at home in machines driven by conventional AC drives, allowing
precise control of the speed and torque of an AC induction motor. Its
performance surpasses that of most DC drives and approaches that of
servo, and it is available from 1 to 350hp, with open loop and closed
loop models available. Optional firmware packages tailor the SV3000 to
demanding applications such as tension control, digital line-shaft and
centre-driven winders.

[5] FLEXIBLE SOLUTION TO ROTARY SEALS (Ceetak,
28 October 2003)
Ceetak has a new rotary seal design which
it reckons can be adapted to meet the specific requirements of the
toughest manufacturing and process environments. The new VR rotary
seal requires less radial force to form an integral seal, resulting in
less damage or tracking on the shaft, increased component life
expectancy and reduced system leakage. This unique construction can be
supplied in a number of different materials, including nitrile rubber,
FPM/PTFE elastomers and numerous viton variations. Crucially, these
materials can be specified separately for the front and back
components of the seal depending on the shaft media.

[6] LONGER TRAVEL FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION ACTUATORS (Newport
Group, 26 October 2003)
Primarily intended for use in
benchtop optomechanical systems and test and measurement applications,
LTA series actuators are the first to combine both high-resolution
motion and a very long range of travel (50mm) in a novel, compact
package. The actuators come in two versions that provide resolutions
of 7.4 and 35nm. Moreover, the LTA offers a significant increase in
speed over other high-resolution actuators.

Corp, 24 October 2003)
ToleranceCalc 1.0 is an automated
tolerance stack-up calculation wizard especially created to assist
Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD Mechanical software users in conducting
tolerance studies of parts and assemblies at any stage of the design
process. An important characteristic of ToleranceCalc is in-process
instantaneous calculation of planar max, min and worst-case stacks of
any 1D and 2D tolerance chain containing virtually unlimited number of
contributors. It is available worldwide through Autodesk authorised
resellers for $195.

[8] HOLDING MAGNETS LIFT UP TO 60KG (Densitron Control Systems, 29 October 2003)
A new range
of holding magnets from Densitron Control Systems develops a high
attraction force of up to 600N to flat metal surfaces which makes them
capable of lifting 60kg. Particularly suited to work holding, door
catches or for securing inserts in moulding tools, the samarium cobalt
magnets retain their performance even at high temperatures making them
ideal for industrial applications. Available in sizes ranging from 6
to 32mm, the magnets are also available in larger, custom build
designs.

[9] VISION SOFTWARE GAINS NEW FUNCTIONS (Cognex
UK, 24 October 2003)
Cognex has expanded the capabilities
of its VisionPro PC-based machine vision systems with the addition of
new high-performance vision software tools. When an acquired image is
unavailable or unsuitable for training, Synthetic PatMax can be used
to generate reference models without relying on image data; users can
import CAD (DXF) data, extract edges, or sketch freehand to create
reference models. PatInspect is a highly accurate defect detection
tool. And VisionPro eliminates the tradeoff between ease of use and
flexibility by combining graphical development for fast prototyping
with advanced lower-level programming.

[10] ABSOLUTE ENCODERS CLAIM NEW STANDARDS (Hengstler, 26 October 2003)
Hengstler has a new family
of encoders featuring two devices. Acuro-Drive is the first fully
digital motor-integrated encoder with an open BiSS interface.
Acuro-Industry is an adaptive encoder based on the 58mm
industry-standard size. The "heart" of the new absolute encoders is a
common sensor unit centred around an all-new opto ASIC design with
unique benefits. Both single- and multi-turn versions are accommodated
in the same compact housing. This facilitates design tasks and allows
operation even under restricted space conditions. The design also
features enhanced safety through self-diagnostic functions.
