Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
"Globalisation" has not been
anyone's conscious invention. It is simply the result of developments
in transport and communications meeting the explosive growth of
free-market capitalism. But I wonder if it will eventually cause
capitalism to eat itself? Remember ten years ago, the "joke" was that
with so much of the UK's manufacturing being shifted overseas, the
only jobs left would be at telephone call centres? I don't remember
many people predicting then that even the call centre jobs would
follow manufacturing overseas. But they have.
It does make
you wonder how many "safe" jobs there will be for our children. The
security guard monitoring banks of CCTV cameras in your local shopping
centre? I was staggered to read that he could now be an outworker the
other side of the world, sitting in front of a shiny PC in a small
shack. But it's not just the low-skilled jobs being moved to poorer
parts of the world. Skilled manufacturing has moved, and so can the
design, the research, and more. I think the public in the "west" is
often unaware that the difference between the "west" and the "low
cost" economies is just that - the cost. There's a perception in the
"west" that it's mainly the lower-skilled jobs which the lower cost
economies are after. Big mistake. The technological skills in
countries such as India and China are still widely underestimated
elsewhere in the world, as our many readers there often remind me.
The "joke" now is that everyone in the "west" will end up
working in the leisure sector. But no economy can survive on leisure
alone.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter
useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here,
there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added
daily, so do take a look if you can. Alternatively, the full stories
behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be
retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you
have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the
newsletter better, email me directly.

TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION =======================================================
[1] MINIATURE PANEL PC AIMS FOR MACHINE BUILDERS (Phoenix
Contact, 16 November 2003)
Phoenix Contact has developed a
new rugged miniature panel PC for the OEM market. The PPC5006 comes
with a 6in LCD, touch screen and full VGA or is optionally available
as a blind node. If required the unit can be supplied with an integral
Soft-PLC, eliminating the need for multiple devices and reducing
cabinet sizes to a minimum. Up to three slots enable connection to bus
couplers for Interbus, Profibus, CANopen or DeviceNet, for maximum
network connectivity.

[2] CAM LOCKS OFFER DURABILITY AND DESIGN (Southco, 13 November 2003)
A new line of cam locks from
Southco is designed specifically for panels that require secure
key-locking or manual access without compression. They are durable and
are ideal for applications that must meet demanding NEMA 4 and IP66
requirements where dust, dirt, and liquid contaminants are an issue,
such as caravans or off-highway equipment. There's a stainless steel
lock cover for scratch resistance and an O-ring for a complete seal of
the internal latch components.

[3] BUDGET UV SENSOR OUTPERFORMS BIG VISION SYSTEMS (EMX
Industries, 16 November 2003)
The UVX 300 is a novel UV
luminescence sensor claimed to detect targets more reliably than
vision systems that typically cost ten times more. Other industry
"firsts" being claimed include long-range sensing capability, smallest
UV sensor size, fastest response time/sensitivity specs, and a
solution for the long-standing difficulty of tuning the sensor to a
light that is invisible to the operator. Not as widely known as other
sensors, UV (ultraviolet light) sensors can detect the application of
seals, grease, adhesives, paper labels and other materials, for
quality assurance and manufacturing process feedback. Because UV
sensors can easily discriminate targets in any orientation from
similarly coloured backgrounds, they are often more reliable than
vision systems costing $6000 and more. The UVX 300 extends the useful
operating distance of UV sensors to 350mm - three to six times the
distance of competing sensors - so the sensor will not get bumped or
dirtied by passing targets.

[4] SENSOR SPOTS LIQUID AT THE COST OF A SWITCH (Active
Switch and Sensor, 17 November 2003)
The TANEWS1 is a novel
sensor that detects the presence of liquid. Its switch contacts will
remain closed until the liquid drains away from the two sensor probes.
The only mechanical part of the sensor is a reed switch, so
reliability is expected to be very good. Liquids should be
noncorrosive and in a temperature range +5 to +80C.

[5] BONDING FASTENERS ARE SPEEDY ALTERNATIVE (Jet
Press, 17 November 2003)
Bonding fasteners have proved
extremely popular with the manufacturing and automotive industries,
providing a hidden fastening solution. The latest Jetloc range again
eliminates the need to drill unsightly fixing holes (and the necessary
making good), speeding up the production process. Suitable for a vast
array of applications where load-distributing anchorages are required,
Jetloc bonding fasteners provide a particularly effective metal to
plastic fastening system.

[6] ALL-DIGITAL SERVO GAINS IEC61131-3 PROGRAMMING (Parker
Hannifin EME, 17 November 2003)
New modular hardware and
software options significantly extend the functionality of Parker
Hannifin's Compax3 intelligent servo drive. They include IEC61131-3
graphical and textual programming facilities, advanced electronic cam
functions, and a powerful PLC controller card which facilitates
cost-effective configuration of multi-axis motion control systems.
Compax3 series all-digital servo drives are inherently modular and
based extensively on open industry standards, enabling system
integrators and machine builders to address sophisticated automation
requirements without using proprietary software. The drives cover a
very wide power range from 1 to 20kVA.

[7] PIPE COUPLING SLASHES TIME AND EFFORT (Viking
Johnson, 19 November 2003)
The new AquaFast range of
couplings and flange adapters for polyethylene and PVC pipes make the
installation of pipe joints simpler and quicker than ever. There are
only two bolts to tighten on sizes up to 125mm, and no need for a
torque wrench. Instead the metal-to-metal positive stop shows when
final assembly has been achieved, so a spanner is all that is
required. Designed to resist pull-out as specified in WIS4-24-01 Type
2 and ISO14236.2, AquaFast also dispenses with the support liner
normally required for PE pipes.

[8] LUBRICANT GAINS FOOD-GRADE APPROVAL (Kluber
Lubrication GB, 17 November 2003)
Good news for all those
using Barrierta L 55/2, the high-temperature and long-term lubricant
up to 260C. For decades this proven special lubricant based on
perfluorinated polyether (PTFE) has been successfully used for a large
variety of applications such as bearings subject to high temperatures
in the textile, packaging and food-processing industries. Now
Barrierta L 55/2 even fulfils the requirements of FDA for food-grade
lubricants and has been approved according to NSF H1.

[9] COST-EFFECTIVE EXPANSION FOR DIN-RAIL POWER (Lambda
UK, 18 November 2003)
Lambda has added 100 and 180W models
to its lead-free DLP series of DIN-rail mounted AC/DC supplies. With
its high efficiency, low heat generation and long life, the very
competitively priced DLP is also up to 17% smaller than competing
units, making it ideal in areas where space is at a premium.
