Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
There are few
subjects which most of us need to keep up-to-date with more than
safety, whether it’s product safety issues, or machine and plant
safety. We regularly cover this topic in Engineeringtalk, of course,
but obviously space has to be shared with many other areas, and I know
many of you look through this newsletter every week very closely, in
case there’s some major legislative news mentioned which you don’t
want to miss.
For that reason, this week we’re launching a
new publication, the eleventh in our lineup, dedicated to product,
machine and plant safety. Industrialsafetytalk will take the same
format as Engineeringtalk, with a website updated every day, and – in
a few weeks’ time – a regular email newsletter. You can sign up right
now to be sent the newsletter (which is free, naturally), by sending a
blank email to mailto:join-industrialsafetyta[-email
removed-]o-talk.com
I’m pleased to say that we’ve
managed to get the well-known engineering journalist Jonathan Severn
to edit the website and the newsletter. For many years, Jonathan wrote
the “Safety First” section in the UK’s largest design engineering
magazine, Industrial Technology, and he currently contributes to
magazines such as Industrial Networking and Open Control, and European
Design Engineer. Jonathan aims to get a substantial amount of original
news and information into Industrialsafetytalk, so you’ll read about
many issues that we perhaps might not have got into Engineeringtalk or
our sister publication Manufacturingtalk.
To see the extent
of Industrialsafetytalk’s coverage, the website (although in its early
stages!) is worth a look: http://www.industrialsafetytalk.com
Finally, if you’re a manufacturer which supplies safety-related
components or systems, you should be sending your press releases into
Industrialsafetytalk, where they’ll all be published immediately. We
hope to make this one of the busiest and best safety resources in the
world, so do ensure you’re featured. We don’t charge a penny to any
manufacturer, so you’ve a lot to gain in terms of publicity and
nothing to lose. More details at
http://www.industrialsafetytalk.com/indexes/submissiondetails.html
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there
are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added
daily, so do take a look if you can. Alternatively, the full
stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter
can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the
meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best
wishes Chris Rand, Editor mailto:ne[-email

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ====================================================================
[1] VIBRATION MONITOR PREDICTS BEARING FAILURES (IFM Electronic, 17 May 2004)
It can be costly to monitor
the condition of rolling bearings continuously, but new from IFM
Electronic is the Efector Octavis, which recognises, displays and
signals bearing condition, affordably. The company says it means
monitoring is no longer restricted to the most critical bearings, and
users will not need extensive training in vibration frequency
analysis. Octavis is permanently mounted on plant equipment and has
the processing capability to analyse a vibration signature and to
predict failures in advance by sending an alarm output signal to a PLC
or relay. This can optimise machine availability and plant up time.

A new range of brass
press-in inserts is designed for easy installation in plastics with
either an arbour press or a fully automatic machine. The Spirol Series
50 is suitable for use with ABS and polycarbonate plastics in
applications such as securing circuit boards and displays on to
plastic housings and many other generic uses. Good overall joint
performance is achieved.

[3] DRIVE FOR LOGICAL APPLICATIONS (Rockwell Automation, 16 May 2004)
Demand is increasing
for intelligent variable speed drives that can perform basic logic
functions. Suitable for applications up to 7.5kW, the latest
Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 40 AC drive from Rockwell Automation features
sensorless vector control to meet low speed torque demands - and
offers machine designers and OEMs a cost effective and flexible
alternative to installing both a drive and logic controller. Ideal for
low power applications such as incline conveyors, extruders and
constant torque pumps, the Allen-Bradley drive is equipped with
configurable I/O and includes step logic, basic logic, timer and
counter functions.

[4] MOTORS GET DOWN AND DIRTY (Baldor, 16 May 2004)
Baldor has released a new grade of
electric motors for "dirty duty" applications, which feature a range
of special protection measures that will withstand the most severe and
corrosive applications in the processing industry, and intense
high-pressure washdown. The new DirtyDutyWD motor range features a new
exterior surface coating that is bonded to its steel frame, and to the
cast-iron endplates, conduit box, lid and base. The coating is
impervious to high pressures, extreme temperatures and caustic
chemicals that can deteriorate painted motor components. The
1750rev/min motors are available in ratings from 0.373 to 7.5kW, in
both US and European voltages and frequencies, in C-face versions,
with or without base mountings.

[5] BOXES PROVIDE FOOLPROOF WATERPROOF ETHERNET (Hayes Control Systems, 18 May 2004)
Overcoming the need
to put Ethernet connections into enclosures, the latest Beckhoff
fieldbus boxes are rated to IP67 and can be mounted in the open.
Available exclusively in the UK from Hayes Control Systems, the new
boxes start with the Compact model, providing an Ethernet port, plus
up to eight I/O channels, ideal for use in locations where only a
small number of inputs and outputs are to be connected. Coupler models
provide the same facilities as the compact boxes, but can also be
connected to up 120 extension boxes. Finally, PLC boxes have in-built
PLC facilities, allowing them to offer local control.

[6] EASY-FIT LEVEL SENSOR HAS MARINE CERTIFICATION (Solartron Mobrey, 18 May 2004)
An intrinsically safe and
marine-certified version of the Squing level sensor has been developed
to enable bulk carrier operators to meet the new SOLAS regulation,
XII/12, recently passed by the International Maritime Organisation.
The Marine Squing sensor can be simply mounted, without causing
obstruction, into a T-piece offset on the sounding tube found in all
bulk cargo holds. An integral magnetically operated test point on each
sensor facilitates the mandatory testing between loads.

[7] VALVES OFFER MUCH-NEEDED RELIEF (Brownell, 16 May 2004)
A novel range of automatic relief
valves can prevent vacuum or pressure build-up in sealed containers.
Such variation in pressure should not be underestimated; for example a
surface area of 0.5m2, with applied pressure of 0.07kg/cm2, will
result in a loading of 350kg - the equivalent of seven bags of cement.
Brownell’s relief valves come in a wide range of ratings from
millimetres water gauges to 0.07kg/cm2. Installation is quick and
simple by using a locking ring or pipe mounting interface adapter
supplied.

[10] FASTENERS JOIN FREE 3D CAD MODEL LIBRARY (VirtualCAD, 18 May 2004)
VirtualCAD has added
high-detail 3D CAD models for engineered fasteners to its growing free
CAD library and manufacturer part number interchange. Socket head cap
screws, shoulder screws, flat and button head screws, set screws,
pressure plugs, dowel pins etc have all been added in inch and metric
sizes. VirtualCAD has recognised that many users need the highest
detail models that they can find, while others are concerned with the
increased file size that detailed models bring. To address this, a
novel interface allows the user to select the level of detail required
in each model. Knurls can be turned off and/or the threads can be
reset from "circular" to model the "major diameter" only.
