Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
This week sees the launch of
an exciting new free-to-enter design competition which we're
delighted to promote on behalf of our friends at IGUS. It's well worth entering, not just for the kudos, but also for the cash
prizes, because the winner will walk away with a cheque for
£1000.
In the Manus Contest, IGUS is looking for original
applications using plastic plain bearings in creative, ingenious
ways to obtain technical and economic efficiency.
There are entry forms available on line at
http://www.manus-igus.co.uk or you can call Matthew Aldridge or
Nikki Groom on +44 (0) 1604 490000.
When you submit your
entries, please include any supplementary information (such as
data sheets, diagrams, pieces of hardware) - anything that will
help the judges understand what your idea is all about. And those
judges do include our own managing editor Andy Pye.
The closing date for entries is 31 August 2004 and after that the
judging panel will go into secret session prior to the winners
being announced at a special presentation in Northampton which is
scheduled for 15 September.
Please note that the
competition isn't limited to applications using IGUS products,
but is is only open to readers in the UK and Eire. That said, similar competitions have run, are in progress or are in the
pipeline in other territories, so please keep an eye on the IGUS
web sites for more details.
I hope you find this issue of
our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products,
news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our
website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you
can. Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see
details below. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to
how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me
directly.

TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= [1]
ADVANCED DESIGN ANALYSIS ENTERS THE MAINSTREAM (SolidWorks
Corporation, 14 June 2004)
Cosmos 2005 is billed as the
first product group to put advanced design analysis capabilities
such as nonlinear analysis and drop testing into an affordable,
easy-to-use mainstream application. Cosmos 2005 also includes more than 100 user-driven enhancements that make sophisticated
design analysis easy for virtually every person in product
development, regardless of their technical expertise. The entire
Cosmos product line - CosmosWorks, CosmosFloWorks, and
CosmosMotion - has been upgraded for 2005. In addition to the new
simulation capabilities, the three Cosmos applications feature updated interfaces, simplified analysis processes, and tighter
integration with SolidWorks 3D mechanical design software.

SCREW JACK SYSTEM IS SMALLER AND STRONGER (Hepco Slide Systems,
15 June 2004)
The HepcoMotion-ZIMM screw jack building
block system has not just been expanded, it has been completely
reviewed to include a higher order of technical innovation. Its
application potential as a result, has substantially increased.
The system is more compact, yet it carries higher loads. As well
as a greater choice of standard screw jack body sizes, aluminium,
stainless steel, plated or specialist bodies can be specified.

REGULATORS TAKE CONTROL OF HYDRAULIC FLUID FLOW (Sterling
Hydraulics, 17 June 2004)
The JP02C range of two-port
proportional flow regulators provides precise electrical control
of hydraulic fluid flow at pressures up to 210bar. As the UK's
leading designer and manufacturer of hydraulic cartridge valves, Sterling Hydraulics' products are used in a wide range of
applications including construction and earth moving equipment,
agricultural and forestry machines, mining equipment and
industrial machinery. Where control of fluid flow is required,
the two-way, pressure compensated JP02C spool type solenoid
valves provide a regulated flow that is proportional to the input solenoid current, and is also virtually independent of fluctuations
in the load or changes to the input.

PRESSURE-EQUALISATION SYSTEM KEEPS GEARBOXES DRY (Boston Gear, 15
June 2004)
The PosiVent is a novel pressure-equalisation
system designed to keep water, washdown solution and other
airborne contaminants out of gearboxes in food processing and
material handling applications. With this patent-pending design,
gearbox failure associated with contaminants such as bakery dust entering and breaking down lubricants and causing premature failure
is prevented, ultimately increasing performance. The system is
now available as an option on all Boston Gear 700 Series speed
reducers.

MULTIFUNCTION TESTER CHECKS PHASE ROTATION (Fluke (UK), 11 June
2004)
The rugged Fluke/Robin 1650 Series of multifunction
testers offer increased productivity for electricians and test
engineers involved with fixed electrical installations in
domestic, commercial and industrial premises. Both Fluke's latest
multifunction testers the 1652 and 1653 verify conformity with
the 16th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations all in one instrument
however, the 1653 additionally offers a phase rotation test, PC download capability and earth electrode test.

VALVE SPRING STEEL PASSES THE TEST (Corus, 15 June 2004)
The first fatigue tests of the most performance-critical grade of
steel yet to be produced by Corus have been successful. The new
grade of steel has been manufactured to meet the stringent
quality requirements of valve springs. These components, used in
vehicle engines, are in constant motion when in use, making them
one of the most demanding applications for any steel. Around 80kt
of rod a year goes into this market, but very few manufacturers
can supply steel of the required quality.

SOFTWARE MAKES MORE SENSE OF MEASURED DATA (Vision Engineering,
15 June 2004)
KestrelFit is a new software package that
further enhances the capabilities of the successful Kestrel
two-axis noncontact measuring system. KestrelFit fills the gap
between low-cost shop floor gauging systems and top-end video measurement machines. Where the standard Kestrel configuration will
allow for accurate gauging and pass/fail results to be simply
generated, KestrelFit expands on these capabilities considerably,
providing a much higher level of reporting and result
analysis.
