Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

Nice to hear this morning about another successful achievement in space
exploration as Cassini-Huygens, the international mission to Saturn, has
successfully entered into orbit around the planet. But the story which
caught my eye most strongly this week is closer to home ...well, relatively
speaking. The British Antarctic Survey has launched a design competition for
a replacement research station on the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica.

The existing Halley station is built on an ice shelf which is likely to
break off into the sea in the next ten years. Its replacement (which will be
the sixth in the area since 1956) will not only have to match its
predecessors in operating throughout the year in one of the world's most
inhospitable environments, it will have to be "environmentally neutral and
aesthetically inspiring". It will also have to cope with a quadrupling of
staff to 60.

Temperatures at the site reach -30C and of course there are always howling
gales, so you might wonder why the BAS finds that number of people prepared
to tough out the conditions, but when you talk to people who've been there,
the fascination becomes clear (and if you live in Cambridge, as I do, it's
not a rare event to meet BAS people!). As contact with the outside world is
limited, bases like the Halley station have to be self-contained
communities, so the scientists, engineers, technicians and service staff
need comfortable living quarters, a kitchen, restaurant, library and rest
areas as well as their scientific facilities. It'll be fascinating to see
what advances the new facility will offer them.

[1] FILE-SHARING FORMAT GAINS AN EXTRA DIMENSION
(Autodesk, 28 June 2004)

Autodesk has upgraded its Design Web Format (DWF) - its format for sharing
design, engineering and mapping information. In this latest revision, DWF
adds support for sharing 3D models, in addition to the detailed 2D and
object information it already carries. This functionality will be available
in an upcoming release of its free, downloadable viewer software, Autodesk
DWF Viewer 5, expected to be made available mid-July, in conjunction with
the upcoming release of Autodesk's flagship mechanical design application,
Inventor 9.

[2] CLAMPS TAKE TEMPORARY HOLD
(Elesa (UK), 24 June 2004)

Temporary mounting of equipment can be a real problem, especially if a
degree of adjustment is needed for repositioning or during operation, but it
can also be dealt with, using Elesa's new tube clamp and linear actuator
system. These high quality tube and clamp elements incorporate slide-through
and split type clamps, with hex headed and recessed locking screws.

[3] INTEGRATED MOTOR DRIVE PUTS MACHINES IN POSITION
(Festo, 27 June 2004)

Designed to provide machine builders with ultrasimple programmable axis
positioning, the Festo MTR-DCI combines a DC servomotor with a drive and
position controller in a protected IP54-rated housing. Optionally, a
miniature user interface may be specified to give machinery operators a
local control mechanism. A typical application for the new MTR-DCI is the
automation of conveyor pitch in packaging lines.

[4] MODEM DIALS UP AN ENTIRE NETWORK
(Rockwell Automation, 28 June 2004)

The Allen-Bradley 9300-Rades Ethernet modem offers users dial-in access to
an entire Ethernet-based control network - not just to a single controller.
Users can connect from any PC via a phone line and make program changes,
upload and download new programs, update firmware, collect data and monitor
system status - without the time and expense involved in a site visit. The
device, which occupies only 2in of DIN rail space, offers an analogue phone
line input and four 10BaseT Ethernet ports for RJ45 connectors.

[5] SMART SENSORS FEATURE STANDARDISED TEDS
(Honeywell Sensotec, 30 June 2004)

Honeywell smart sensor products and National Instruments (NI) LabView and
data acquisition products now operate on a common platform compatible with
IEEE1451.4, the TEDS standard recently released in final form. Along with
other major sensor manufacturers, Honeywell helped develop the common
platform, called Sensors Plug and Play, by using NI LabView graphical
programming software to program its sensors. As a result, test and
measurement customers can now take advantage of seamless interoperability
between Honeywell Sensotec smart sensors and signal conditioners and NI data
acquisition hardware and software.

[6] ULTRA-HIGH-SPEED BEARINGS ANSWER MACHINE DEMANDS
(NSK UK, 30 June 2004)

NSK's new Robust system of ultra-high-speed bearings meets the requirements
of the machine tool industry for higher spindle speeds (up to 3.5MdmN),
enabling a wider range of machining operations - from rough machining to
finishing - to be performed on a single machine tool. Full details of the
new Robust bearing system and NSK's other Super Precision range of bearing
products are contained in a new global catalogue just produced by the
company, which it says covers what is probably the largest range of Super
Precision bearings available from any one manufacturer. The catalogue also
contains a section on spindle bearing selection with helpful explanations of
spindle design.

[7] RADAR GAUGE MASTERS A STICKY PROBLEM
(Emerson Process Management - Rosemount Measurement, 29 June 2004)

The Rosemount 5600 radar gauge demonstrates "reliable performance in the
stickiest applications", using advanced signal processing and smart echo
tracking features. For example, liquid phenolic resin is a viscous, sticky
liquid - when heated to over 70C and stirred. It also coats anything it
touches, and so level measurement in the 12m-high tanks - in the presence of
heating coils, agitator paddles and fill tubes - has been a challenge for
simple radar gauges, with many false echoes from these obstructions. The
advanced signal processing technology used in the Rosemount 5600 software
enables reliable surface measurement even in these applications.

[8] PLUGS SEAL IN TRICKY SITUATIONS
(Lee Products, 27 June 2004)

High-pressure, high-temperature manifold applications, such as those
occurring in the petrochemicals and offshore oil industry, typically demand
metal-to-metal devices that provide a leak-tight seal and meet API
specifications. Miniature component specialist Lee Products has developed a
range of AFO plugs (axial force only) that are both removable, reusable and
are ideal for these high-pressure/high-temperature situations. AFO plugs
feature a floating seal that self-aligns to allow for threaded holes that
are not concentric with the through hole. As a result of the plug's
two-piece construction, the seal does not rotate during installation, thus
preventing galling of the seat.

[9] USB MODULE CUTS THE COST OF ACQUISITION
(Adept Scientific, 28 June 2004)

The new PMD-1608FS USB data acquisition device from Measurement Computing
offers eight channels of high speed simultaneous sampling analogue input at
a class leading price of less than £(UKP)300. It has outstanding
capabilities for a neat device that's only around 80mm square and 25mm high
- big enough to make connecting field wiring easy, small enough to fit on
even the most crowded workbench. Perhaps most notable is that the PMD-1608FS
offers input accuracy and noise performance equal to that offered by 16bit
DAQ board products from other vendors, all at this very low price.

[10] NYLON FILTER CLEANS UP ON PHOTORESISTS
(Cuno, 28 June 2004)

The new Cuno Photoshield nylon filter cartridge is a highly retentive
membrane filter element designed to provide the highest level of gel and
particle removal from photoresist and ancillary chemicals while also saving
processing time and reducing costs. Allowing high flow rates while
maintaining full efficiency, these filters achieve the required particle
specifications in less time, which results in lower filtration costs by
reducing energy consumption, pump wear and labour costs.
