Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

We had a swift half in the office this week to celebrate the 25,000th news
story going on to our website. You'll probably think "so what?" but let's
put it into context. In the 14 years from 1986 to 1999, I was fortunate
enough to work as a staff writer or Editor on some of the best-known
engineering magazines in the UK (Design Engineering, What's new in Design
and, most notably, Industrial Technology). In that time, I would have been
involved in producing 150 or more monthly issues, with articles ranging from
in-depth features extending over several pages, to the smallest of product
notes. It seemed like hard work, but I guess in all that time we "only" (!)
published 15,000 to 20,000 stories.

Now, in the four-and-a-half years of Engineeringtalk's existence, we've
sailed past that figure. Along with the news editor (who seems to be working
through the night), it seems I've been signing off stories at over four
times the rate we ever did on any of the magazines.

What does that mean for you? Simply that the volume of news (coupled with
the fact that it's far quicker to search all of our 25,000 stories than it
is to leaf through even one issue of a magazine) means you're far less
likely to miss new developments, and (I hope) don't have to worry quite so
much about whether there might be something better on the market than the
component you're about to specify. If that relieves you of any stress
whatsoever, I can sleep more soundly too.

But there's a long way to go yet. There are still many manufacturers out
there who don't send us their press releases, and even more who don't even
write any. So if you don't see news from one of your preferred component
suppliers on Engineeringtalk, grab their sales rep - or even better, their
sales and marketing manager - and ask why they're currently running a Sales
Prevention Campaign. Getting their news on Engineeringtalk - forever - costs
nothing and requires just an email. How difficult can that be?

http://www.engineeringtalk.com/indexes/submissiondetails.html

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on
our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in
this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the
site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
====================================================================

[1] ACCELEROMETER-BASED MOTION TRACKER TAKES POSITION
(Imego, 12 August 2004)

The IMT6000, manufactured by Imego of Sweden, is the first ultralight
inertial navigation system (INS) device able to track motion for 10s with
positional accuracy, in x-y-z co-ordinates, of a few centimetres and angular
accuracy surpassing 0.3 degrees. The system consists of a 60g IMU sensor
head that collects, digitises, stores and transmits all sensory data. A
standby laptop receives the digital information via a Bluetooth link and
computes all requested motion parameters, including positions and angles for
all degrees of freedom.

[2] BREAKTHROUGH CLAIMS FOR SEALING GASKETS
(Novus Sealing, 16 August 2004)

The novel ElastaGraph gasket is billed as a major breakthrough for
industrial liquid and gas sealing applications. The product combines the
outstanding thermal and chemical properties of flexible graphite with an
ability to maintain constant bolt load even under thermal cycling
conditions. This makes the product particularly suited to valve and pipeline
flanged joints in the chemical, petrochemical and general industrial
processing markets. Preformed ElastaGraph gaskets, complete with
identification markings, can be supplied for class 150 and 300 applications.
Larger vessel gaskets can also be supplied to order. Temperatures up to 450C
can be accommodated in oxidising service, even higher in steam and reducing
fluids.

[3] ENCLOSURES ARE HARDENED TO OUTDOOR APPLICATIONS
(Rittal, 18 August 2004)

Three new Rittal enclosures have special design features for economical
outdoor applications. The enclosures, all 350mm deep, are available in sizes
of 800 x 1200, 1200 x 800 or 1200 x 1200mm. The roof plate is
screwed-fastened at the correct distance for permanent air circulation to
prevent the formation of condensation without major technical input such as
heaters or fans. The bonded insulating plate in the roof additionally helps
to prevent the formation of moisture drips.

(Cross + Morse, 17 August 2004)

Cross + Morse has extended its range of high-performance industrial
transmission products with the Ferrodan-IPL range of engineered V-belt and
timing-belt pulleys. Of particular interest is their wide application
capability; the V-belt pulleys are manufactured for taper bushes, solid hubs
and variable pitch - up to 1250mm diameter. The timing belt range, for taper
bushes, pilot bored or timing bars is also available up to 1250mm diameter.

[5] STERLING PERFORMANCE FROM THREE-WAY VALVES
(Sterling Hydraulics, 17 August 2004)

Sterling Hydraulics' new N04 series of four-port three-way directional
valves are capable of switching high flows of up to 85 litre/min. In a
standard aluminium line body the valves can operate at up to 210bar, and a
zinc plated steel version is available for pressures up to 420bar. Both are
10-4 industry common cavity compliant. The N04 range can be combined in many
ways either into a manifold with other valves to form a complete hydraulic
circuit. One possibility is to use two N04 valves and a solenoid valve in
combination to make an electrically operated six-port diverter valve.

[6] MANAGEMENT SYSTEM OPTIMISES PROCESS ALARMS
(Yokogawa UK, 14 August 2004)

Many plants have introduced alarm analysis and reporting systems from
various suppliers in order to get a better picture of their plant
operations, but because of employee turnover and/or reduction in budgets,
many plants do not have a sufficient number of engineers on hand who possess
the level of plant experience and knowledge necessary to be able to take
full advantage of these analytical systems. Consequently, many of these
plants have not yet succeeded in fully solving the problems that they had
sought to address with the introduction of these systems, and are still
plagued by alarm "flooding". Now, with the availability of its AAASuite,
Yokogawa says these issues need no longer be a problem. AAASuite is an alarm
management system that optimises and enhances process alarms issued by
control systems, automatically detecting typical nuisance alarms such as
repeating high/low alarms caused by improper alarm settings and chattering
high/low alarms caused by improper PID parameter settings.

[7] HMIS PROMISE SIMPLIFIED DATABASE REPLACEMENT
(MMI Solutions, 17 August 2004)

HMI configuration updates or replacement configurations have traditionally
needed the configuration software and programming cables in order for the
changes to be downloaded, usually requiring an engineer to be present.
However, with the V7 Series of HMIs from MMI Solutions, the downloading can
either be performed on power up or from a simple menu on the HMI itself. The
key to this is the ability to have the configuration stored on a standard
CompactFlash card which can be saved from the unit on completion of
commissioning or saving directly to the CF card from V-SFTE the
configuration software.

[8] MOTORS AIM FOR AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS
(Baldor, 18 August 2004)

Baldor has expanded its presence in the UK motor market by launching a range
of large metric-mounting single-phase AC induction motors primarily intended
for farm and agricultural applications. The range comprises four models,
with IEC frame sizes of D100L, D112M, D132S and D132M, with power ratings of
2.2, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.5kW and are designed for direct-online operation from
standard 240V, 50Hz single-phase mains supplies. The 2.2 and 3kW models
feature very low starting currents, enabling them to be run from a standard
domestic supply. Typical applications include milk pumps, conveyor and
hopper feed systems, crop dryers and grain stirrers.

[9] ATEX 137 DOS AND DON'TS EXPLAINED
(ABB Automation Technologies (Drives and Motors), 17 August 2004)

ABB's campaign to help its customers comply with ATEX 137 continues with the
publication of "ATEX 137 dos and don'ts", a step-by-step guide to the
responsibilities of end users operating motors in potentially explosive
atmospheres. ATEX 137 became law throughout Europe last year and is designed
to protect employees, the public and the environment from explosion hazards.
But many firms find implementing the directive daunting, especially as it
covers industries such as food, pharmaceuticals and cereals, which may not
have had to consider the risk of explosion under previous legislation.
