Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

The way we use the internet continues to change, and this week Microsoft has announced its own, home-grown search engine to take on the dominant Google. However strong Google may be (and I bet there aren't many Engineeringtalk readers who don't use it), Microsoft has come from nowhere to take over in a market before (browsers), and it will do it again in others. Whether search is one of them remains to be seen; Google is racing ahead, and its new desktop search tool has had many users claiming it's transformed the way they work.
Will Microsoft's own-brand search tool (now available in a test version and believed to be having a full launch at the start of 2005) be more useful to us in the technical sector than Google? Maybe: the company said at the launch that its search engine returns results from five billion web pages, more than anyone else, but Google then smartly announced that it's extended its index to cover eight billion pages. This is important, as those of us looking for non-mainstream, technically-based material could see a benefit from this growth. Fortunately if you're looking for a slip clutch/brake or a shaft encoder with a Hiperface interface, the results are still generally good (unlike if you're looking for reviews on refrigerators or other domestic goods, where the first 10,000 results have been over-run by automated shopping sites).
But these things come and go: Microsoft took over the browser market from the totally dominant Netscape in 2001-2002, but now there are signs of a rally from Netscape's spiritual successor, Firefox, which had its full 1.0 launch too this week. This free browser is a lot better than Internet Explorer, and I'd thoroughly recommend downloading and trying it.

[1] SLIP CLUTCH BRAKE PROVIDES MANUFACTURER OPTIONS
(Mayr Transmissions, 4 November 2004)

Mayr's new ROBA-contitorque continuous slip clutch and brake is a series of adjustable, reliable, non-contact wear free, constant torque units. The design will be suitable for slip duties such as winders and driven pinch rolls, screw cap closing, and small test dynamometers, for instance. It offers contactless, wear-free, torque transmission, soft start and take up, accurate repeatability and precise torque limitation.

[2] LUBRICATION-FREE CHAIN FOR HEAVY DUTY USE
(Renold Chain, 10 November 2004)

Renold Chain has extended its Syno range of lubrication-free chains with the development of a polymer bush chain, for heavy-duty applications, that requires no lubrication at all. The chain is designed with a specially developed polymer sleeve that fits between the pin and the bush for high wear and fatigue resistance. Another specially developed polymer has been produced for the chain's rollers that have excellent impact resistance and load-bearing capabilities claimed Renold. Sizes range from 1.75 to 2.5 inch pitch for BS chain and 1.5 to 2.5 inch pitch for ANSI chain.

[3] LD CONNECTORS IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY
(Tyco Electronics UK, 4 November 2004)

The latest in Tyco Electronics' Stax range of elastomeric connectors, Stax LD, is claimed to deliver improved electrical performance, reliability and durability compared to other connectors on the market. They provide higher conductivity and line consistency to enable tighter pitch applications, while requiring less deflection force. Able to accommodate both analogue and digital signals, the elastomeric connectors are effective at high signal speeds, and provide minimal signal distortion at high frequencies.

[4] SHAFT ENCODERS WITH SPEED AND POSITION CONTROL
(Sick, 9 November 2004)

Until now, an incremental encoder has been required to control the speed of a motor and a secondary absolute encoder needed to provide information on the position of the motor shaft after the power was switched off. The new Sick Stegmann Sincos SRS 64 and SRM 64 shaft encoders with Hiperface interfaces for AC induction motors provide both speed and absolute position control in one cost effective unit. The interface allows them to operate with servo drives from most of the leading vendors. Both the SRS 64 and SRM 64 produce over two million counts per revolution of the motor shaft, compared with the typical incremental encoder output of just 1,024 counts, the company points out

[5] SERVO MOTORS FOR DAMP AND DUSTY ENVIRONMENTS
(Rockwell Automation, 4 November 2004)

Rockwell Automation has extended the Allen-Bradley MP Series of servo motors with models suitable for use in the damp and dusty environments found in food and beverage packaging and materials handling applications. Available in four frame sizes, they provide continuous stall torque from 1.6 to 19.4 Nm and peak torque from 3.6 to 48.6 Nm IP 66 and 67. Rated to resist liquid contamination, the MPF Series servo motors share the performance characteristics of the MP Series, with extra features including a stainless steel shaft with hardened seal, quadruple O-ring seals for the connectors and a two-part food grade epoxy coating.

[6] DATA SERVICE MEANS USERS CAN STICK WITH OWN CADS
(Delcam, 4 November 2004)

Delcam has added the ability to generate files in the CATIA V5 format from all major CAD file types to its PS-Exchange on-line data translation service. It has offered the ability to read CATIA 5 files for more than a year. Delcam launched PS-Exchange in 1999 when it was the first on-line translation service to use a pay-per-use voucher-based payment system. Since the translation software is stored on the user's own computer, the system is completely secure. Secondly, only a short authorisation code is transferred over the web, not the complete CAD model.

Pico Technology has introduced a USB (v1.1) version of its TC-08 eight-channel thermocouple data logger. The new unit is claimed to sample at up to 10 readings per second (more than twice the speed of the serial port version), features built-in cold junction compensation (CJC) and covers the temperature range -270 degrees C to 1820 degrees C. The TC-08 can be used with thermocouple types B, E, J, K, N, R, S and T and outputs can be viewed in degrees C or mV.

[8] CARBON STRIP STEEL HAS CLOSEST THICKNESS TOLERANCE
(Sandvik Materials Technology UK, 9 November 2004)

Sandvik Materials Technology is claiming a first by supplying the closest, industry specified, thickness tolerances as a standard feature on its 20C carbon strip steel. The steel is used in the manufacture of high performance valves, discs and shims for shock absorbers. The tolerances, designated 'T4', specify a thickness variation from only +/-0.003mm on 0.102mm thick strip to +/-0.005mm on 0.305mm strip - the typical range of steel strip thicknesses used in shock absorbers. The key benefit of such close tolerance control is that flows within the shock absorber will be more consistent, resulting in more even and smoother automotive suspension systems said Sandvik.
