Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

Last year I listed a few of the engineering stories to watch in
2004, and one of these, the fabulous Millau Viaduct in France, opens
to traffic today. This stunning feat of engineering will carry
traffic at 270 metres above the valley of the river Tarn. It has
been designed by the British architectural practice Foster and
Partners in association with an engineering group led by the French
engineer Michel Virlogeux.

The numbers surrounding the bridge are impressive, but this is one
engineering project where the technical side is at least equalled by
the beauty of the finished article, reminiscent of another
Anglo-French project, one which touched down for the last time
earlier this year. I've been searching around for further reading on
the bridge, and I'd recommend http://www.masl.to/?E1132190A ...or if
you just want to see some of this week's press coverage, take a look
at http://masl.to/?B2F12290A for the pictures or start at
http://news.google.co.uk/news?q=millau for the news.

Better still, I'm sure many of us will be making the pilgrimage down
to the south of France in future years to see the Millau Viaduct for
ourselves and experience what's promised to be as close a feeling as
you can get to being in a flying car. It's always the mark of a
great engineering project when people go out of their way just to
take a look at it.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here,
there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being
added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone:
see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might
make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

[2] SAMPLING CYLINDERS CONFORM TO TPED
(Parker Hannifin Instrumentation Products Division, 13 Dec 2004)

Parker Instrumentation has launched a range of stainless steel
sampling cylinders, conforming to the Transportable Pressure
Equipment Directive (TPED). The new TPED Series cylinders are "hot
spun" from 316 stainless steel tubing, providing a seamless finish
for maximum integrity and corrosion resistance. Typical applications
include hydrocarbon sampling in refineries, gas sampling in
chromatography, and condensate sampling in fossil fuel and nuclear
power plants. Sampling cylinders are also commonly used as pressure
surge accumulators or reaction vessels.

[3] FLUOROSILICONE RUBBER SUITS EXTREME APPLICATIONS
(Dow Corning, 15 Dec 2004)

Dow Corning has published independent research entitled "FSRs in
extreme applications" which highlights the continuing evolution of
fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) technology, describing laboratory
results comparing the performance of Silastic brand LS 5-2060 and
LS-2860 FSR from Dow Corning against conventional FKM compounds.
Free copies of "FSRs in extreme applications" are available from the
Dow Corning website.

(Wyko Industrial Services, 13 Dec 2004)

Timken G-Power and M-Power single-point lubricators are a new line
of gas-powered and motorised lubrication devices designed to connect
directly to existing grease or lubrication fittings and apply
precise amounts of lubricant to bearings and other mechanical
interfaces. Available in three models, G-Power gas lubricators are
designed for normal industrial settings, and the M-Power motorised
lubricators feature reusable drive motors with battery or
direct-wire power and replaceable lubrication canisters.

[5] FASTER ACCESS TO OVOID GEARBOX
(Mclennan Servo Supplies, 14 Dec 2004)

Designed to fit a wide variety of instrument motors, the popular
Mclennan P5 ovoid gearbox has been re-engineered to offer a shorter
manufacturing lead time for high volume applications. Ratios from
25:6 to 15,000:1 are available, and comprehensive stocks of the 15
most popular ratios are carried. Full compatibility is available
with several motor ranges manufactured by Premotec, and the
gearboxes can also be fitted to motors manufactured by other

[6] CONVERTORS TAKE ACTIVE CONTROL
(Inertial Aerosystems, 13 Dec 2004)

Inertial Aerosystems has introduced a new range of synchro
amplifiers and digital to synchro convertors, which can drive loads
up to 300VA. Powered from the system's AC reference supply, these
high efficiency, solid state units have optically isolated BIT,
output enable, and a "kick start" facility which is used to free
jammed synchro rotors.

[7] FASTENERS AVOID THERMAL DANGERS OF WELDING
(Rencol Tolerance Rings, 14 Dec 2004)

Castor mounts are frequently welded into position in tubular frames.
And although this has the benefit of creating a permanent and
durable fixing, the high temperatures encountered can result in
distortion of components elsewhere on the castor assembly, such as
the brake mechanism mount. The tolerance ring offers a convenient,
easy to assemble alternative, using a press-fit assembly which
creates a high performance, durable joint. Ring specification and
wave height can be designed to meet the needs of seamless tubes,
which typically have better tolerances, or of welded tubes.

(Danaher Motion, 13 Dec 2004)

Danaher Motion has enhanced the connectivity of its Servostar drives
by offering SynqNet and EtherCAT interface cards. These
communication cards are plug and play, simply fit the required
expansion card in the option slot of an existing Servostar S300 or
S600 drive and the drive will communicate as required. Servostar

[9] ULTRASONIC DETECTOR PREDICTS BEARING FAILURE
(Logis-Tech Associates, 14 Dec 2004)

It has been shown that 30% of bearings have defects at the beginning
of their lifecycle, due to faulty installation or machine flaws such
as shaft misalignment. The EP2400 ultrasonic detector set is a
portable, handheld, device with a stethoscope that can be used to
check and recheck bearings at the very beginning to verify that
installation is correct, and provide the earliest indication of
defects. Worth a look.
