Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

The headline in this year's "Which?" report on car reliability was
the ascent to the top category of Ford, joining the various Japanese
brands which have been camped there for years. It can't be a
coincidence that Ford's reliability has coincided with a period where
its design in general has been held in such high regard. All of its
mainstream models, such as the class-leading Focus, have been major
hits with motoring journalists and the public alike. But it would
seem the good design was not limited to the driving experience.

When I studied engineering at university in the 1980s, "Designing for
Quality" was a hot topic, alongside "Designing for Manufacture". I
don't hear as much about those topics today; perhaps that's just
because they've been so assimilated into the engineering culture. But
I'm not so sure. It's more likely that the consultants have found
other things to move on to. Yet outside the Far East, the need to cut
manufacturing costs is more critical than ever. Design has a crucial
role to play here.

Whilst the popular perception is that quality is a manufacturing
issue, we know that in practice, it stems from design and
engineering. Get the design process right, and exemplary product
quality should be as much of a result as good product performance.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there
are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily,
so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see
details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

[1] METER CUTS THE COST OF FLOW MEASUREMENT
(ABB Automation Tech (Instrumentation + Automation), 01 Aug 2005)

It's claimed that the cost of electromagnetic flow measurement can be
cut by up to 20% with the FXL4000 (COPA-XL range) flow meter from
ABB. Featuring a lightweight sensor with integrated electronics, the
device offers a cost-effective method of measuring flow in a wide
range of chemical and water industry applications, including drinking
water conditioning plants, dosing stations and sewage treatment
plants. With no moving parts and zero maintenance, the ABB COPA-XL
can be installed directly in the pipe without the need for additional
mountings. The COPA-XL is a true full bore meter and causes no
additional resistance to flow.

[2] COMPACT SERVO AMPLIFIER COMES AS PCB-MOUNT BLOCK
(Motion Control Products, 04 Aug 2005)

Billed as the world's smallest analogue servo drivers, the Ocarina
series of miniature servo amplifiers are designed for brushed and
brushless rotary or linear servomotors. Each device incorporates
custom mixed analogue and digital ICs and a hybrid power stage.
Measuring 46.5 x 55 x 15mm, weighing in at only 45g and packaged in a
totally enclosed PCB mounting block, the Ocarina is claimed to be
most densely packed high performance servo drive on the market.

[3] HANDHELD RIVETING TOOL TAKES TO THE FIELD
(Henrob Direct, 29 Jul 2005)

Available now from Henrob Direct, the RivLite is a handheld
battery-powered tool for installing rivets where complete portability
is required, such as field applications or on-site repair. The tool
features a modular design, which allows interchangeable tooling
options such as C-frames of different sizes, noses for 3 or 5mm
diameter rivets and a special nose for setting threaded self-pierce
studs.

[4] GOLD ELECTROFORMING ALLOWS INTRICATE CONSTRUCTIONS
(Abssac, 02 Aug 2005)

Drawing on more than 40 years of experience, a new patent-pending
electroforming technology allows Abssac to supply solid gold
electroforms. Enabling the use of gold within applications has
allowed some remarkable properties of the material to be exploited;
it is the most nonreactive of all metals, and does not react with
oxygen, which means it will not oxidise or tarnish. Gold is among the
most electrically conductive of all metals and is able to convey even
a tiny electrical current in temperatures varying from -55 to +200C.
The electroforming process is especially crafted for
tolerance-critical miniature parts and makes them suitable for both
flexible bellows and rigid electroformed components.

[5] SOFT START VALVE IS EASY ON DOWNSTREAM EQUIPMENT
(Norgren, 02 Aug 2005)

Norgren is now offering a novel monitored soft start dump valve to
help avoid machine downtime. An integral microswitch monitors the
dump function, ensuring that the valve is in the signalled position
prior to the next machine operation. Based on a 0.5in pipe, the valve
delivers a high forward flow and dump flow capacity.

[7] SOFTWARE TURNS CONTROLLERS TO SAFETY PLC TASKS
(Pilz Automation Technology, 01 Aug 2005)

With the release of the Pilz PNOZmulti Configurator software version
4, users can create more complex safety-related control programs for
execution on PNOZmulti modular controllers. The user interface has
also been improved to simplify the preparation and modification of
larger programs, and the diagnostics have been enhanced to aid
commissioning and troubleshooting. This means the PNOZmulti modular
safety controller is suitable for a far wider range of applications
than before, potentially replacing some costly safety PLC
applications for relatively complex safety control tasks.

[8] VALVES KEEP HYDRAULIC LEGS IN CHECK
(Sterling Hydraulics, 01 Aug 2005)

When hydraulic stabiliser legs on mobile equipment are fully
extended, full relief valve pressure can be trapped behind the check
valve. If this pressure is released rapidly when retracting the leg,
the resulting decompression shock produces an initial sudden
movement, accompanied by a loud noise. To eliminate these problems,
which are of major concern to the users of mobile equipment, Sterling
Hydraulics has developed a new version of its proven D02B2 check
valve. This has been specifically engineered to provide a heavily
restricted initial opening phase, which ensures controlled pressure
release. In stabiliser leg applications, noise and shock are,
therefore, completely eliminated.

[9] REMOTE MONITORING AND LOGGING COME TOGETHER
(Jekyll Electronic Technology, 29 Jul 2005)

Measuring instruments with either pulsed or digital outputs can now
be connected to the Jekyll's Telelog, allowing a simple but effective
approach to data collection, logging, remote interrogation and
communications. Two versions are available. For control and
instrumentation engineers, systems integrators and design engineers,
the Alarm Telelog provides an ideal way to add communications to a
low cost meter. Its ability to generate an alarm that can be sent
directly to a central location or via SMS to field personnel means
they can be informed of abnormal or fault conditions immediately. The
Pulsar Telelog works with any meter that provides a pulsed output and
is ideal to interface with utility meters for accurate, up to the
minute monitoring of energy usage.
