Seals help reduce driver fatigue

A DP Seals product story

Custom rubber seals are playing a key role in the ride comfort of executive cars.

DP Seals' custom rubber seals are playing a key role in the ride comfort of executive cars.

A leading global supplier of miniature power transmission components and actuators to major OEMs worldwide integrates these custom seals with its solenoids into active components in electronic engine vibration control units - an essential component in the battle to reduce noise vibration harshness (NVH) levels in modern cars.

On demand, the seal caps an air bleed hole in the vehicle's electronic engine mounting, controlling the vibration levels transferred from the engine to the body.

At the request of a major European car manufacturer, the supplier developed a high-reliability solenoid for integration into the ride management systems of its executive range.

However, to ensure a good seal over the lifetime of the car, the chosen material had to combine softness and durability but show no hint of stickiness.

DP Seals backed its in-depth technical knowledge with extensive durability testing and a very customer-oriented approach.

DP Seals developed the soft durable rubber tip for the solenoid.

To meet the need for non-stick operation, the seals are subjected to a harsh chlorine-rich atmosphere that etches the surface, eliminating any tendency to stick in operation Extensive testing proved the rubber tip did not stick whenever the solenoid was deactivated.

A vehicle's engine is a major source of noise and vibration that is potentially damaging to equipment, reducing operational efficiency and increasing service requirements.

Low frequency, 4-8Hz, vibration is particularly unpleasant for the vehicle's occupants - setting up sympathetic vibration in internal organs - and 10-25Hz vibration manifests as an objectionable humming in the passenger compartment.

Isolating the engine helps eliminate these effects.

Mounting the engine on simple soft shock absorbers improves the situation, eliminating much of the vibration caused at low engine speeds but introduces performance issues at higher loads and speeds.

The intelligent engine mount is soft under zero load, stiffening up under acceleration/deceleration (load) and higher engine speeds.

The combination of the DP Seals rubber tip on the solenoid makes a major contribution to this control mechanism.
