DSM Somos has kicked off a 6-month development initiative, using a round table format, to promote the commercial usefulness of composite stereolithography (SL) resins for rapid tooling applications.

Initial emphasis will be on injection moulding tools.

"The focus of this group will be to define the parameters of where SL rapid tooling is more cost-effective than CNC machining, and then to establish the reliability and robustness parameters of SL composite tools", says Somos Marketing Manager Eva Montgomery.

"Ultimately, we hope to drive advancements in rapid tooling through the use of ProtoComposite SL resins such as Somos ProtoTool 20L and Nanoform 15120".

The round table met for the first time during the annual conference of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) held from 9th to 12th May in Dearborn, Michigan.

The group included representatives from several rapid prototyping service bureaus, design houses and OEMs - all experienced with SL rapid tooling or interested in gaining that experience.

A second round table meeting will be held on 8th June during the Design-2-Part show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
