Molex uses DSM's halogen-free insulation material

A DSM Engineering Plastics product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 27, 2009

Molex, a supplier of interconnect products, has selected the Stanyl Fortii halogen-free (HF) insulation material from DSM Engineering Plastics to meet the material requirements for SMT technology.

As part of its halogen-free material selection, the company tested the F11 grade of Stanyl Fortii for its latest high-speed SATA connector with a speed of 6Gb/s because it offered high pin retention forces and a range of key processing and performance benefits.

Stanyl Fortii, which extends the DSM portfolio of high-performance engineering thermoplastics, offers a step change with a balance of properties.

It is intended to meet the current and upcoming requirements of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), supporting 'green' initiatives such as lead-free soldering and improved fuel economy.

John McMullan, global key account manager of Molex at DSM Engineering Plastics Americas, said: 'Stanyl Fortii meets market trends for miniaturisation and convergence of electronic devices such as cell phones and computers.

'It is suitable for connectors and sockets in these applications because of its dimensional stability and compatibility in lead-free surface-mount assembly processes,' he added.
