Controller sheds light on machine vision tasks

A Data Translation product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 7, 2005

The DT-VAR-FL software adjustable lighting controller is specifically designed for use in machine vision applications.

Data Translation has developed the DT-VAR-FL software adjustable lighting controller for use in machine vision applications.

The controller provides very stable RS232 brightness control over ring or linear, single or twin T5 lamps with combined powers from 4 to 18W.

The software adjustable lighting controller is particularly useful in situations, for example, where a number of differently coloured versions of product are produced and inspected on the same production line.

Being able to change the light output from software means you can easily adjust the light level used for the product under inspection.

Using DT Vision Foundry users can set up an optimised inspection script for each different colour of product and then by simply selecting the correct script the lighting is automatically adjusted to the right level without additional operator intervention.

Software adjustable lighting can also be used in situations where the light level in the measurement zone is changing.

The intensity of the light can be monitored for a specific region of interest (ROI).

If the light intensity changes then a feedback loop can be used to change the light output from the lamp to maintain it at the required level.

The changing light levels may be caused by environmental factors or simply by changes in the output of light from the tube.

Data Translation has successfully implemented the software adjustable lighting controller in a number of recent systems where varying light output was a potential problem.

In addition to selling the controller as part of turnkey projects Data Translation has had a high level of interest from existing customers.

They would like to incorporate the controller retrospectively into existing machine vision systems, to further increase performance.
