Accidental disconnection of computer network systems can have catastrophic consequences, but two simple devices from Datwyler can avoid the problem.

Accidental disconnection of computer network systems can have catastrophic consequences - especially in critical situations such as emergency call centres, hospitals as well as banks and financial institutions In some of these situations, 'pulling the plug out' could mean losing information and making the difference between life and death

Applying lateral thought to this problem, cable manufacturer Datwyler and connecting hardware company Reichle de Massari (R and M) have come up with a solution which is so simple, it's surprising no-one has used it before, according sales manager at Datwyler, Nick Andrews.

"We have designed a physical locking device which stops inadvertent disconnection of patch cords from outlets and patch panels by preventing access to the plug release latch", he said.

The new device, called Plug Guard, only allows the plugs to be removed by a special key, which can be retained by the network manager.

The Plug Guard, which is part of the company's Unilan Ultimax range, is available in three different colours, making it ideal for protecting various different services.

Datwyler also has a solution for those companies who already have network systems in place and don't wish to replace all their outlets.

The Safe Clip is a plug-mounted device that prevents the plug release latch from being operated.

"In a high tech business such as ours, it's sometimes easy to overlook a simple answer to a problem", said Nick.

"These new products provide an efficient solution to those who don't understand the potential problems caused by unplugging a cable which looks like a telephone socket, but is actually a computer network connection carrying critical information".
