Cabling systems for 10Gb Ethernet

A Datwyler (UK) product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 16, 2007

Datwyler's fully shielded cables and components offer a safe base for economic and future-proof network installations.

With Unilan Keystone Solution and Unilan Modular Solution, Datwyler Cables offers two reliable, easy-to-install and standard compliant Class E cabling systems in copper technology.

Both systems allow safe transmissions of all digital and analogue data, audio and image signals in corporate networks for applications like Voice over IP (VoIP) and Power over Ethernet (acc.

IEEE 802.3af), on a long-term basis.

With the shielded Category 6 modules Unilan KST 1/8 and Unilan MS 1/8, even the current 10GBase-T standards acc.

IEEE 802.3an can be fulfilled.

This requires the installation of high quality PiMF cables (Pair in Metal Foil).

10 Gigabit links are possible with Cat 6 twisted pair installation cable Uninet 6002.

However, for reliable 10 Gigabit cabling systems, Datwyler recommends the continuous deployment of Cat.

7 PiMF cables, namely Uninet 7002 4P, 7080 4P, 7702 4P and 7150 4P.

The MS modules are mounted on to the cables via a special gripper and can be employed with a broad range of twisted pair Cat.

6 or 7 Uninet installation-, patch- and connecting cables together with outlets, patch panels and sub-racks to build individual cabling solutions.

Unilan KST 1/8 is a connection which can be mounted without any special tools (T = tool less) and fixed into patch panels and outlets by using the snap-in principle.

The cable access (AWG 24 up to AWG 22) is realised via a wire distribution tool and IDC contacts.

The KST module does not only provide quick mounting and network installation, but also offers the advantage that - in case of failures or change-overs - it can easily be disassembled and re-mounted up to ten times.

Datwyler Cables tested both cabling systems for fulfilling the severe prescriptive limits of the current 10Gbase-T transmission standards, especially in relation to electrical values like NEXT, Return Loss and Delay Skew.

Excellent shielding of Datwyler cables and components reliably protects the 10GBase-T signals from external electromagnetic interferences - also from Alien Crosstalk which can cause many transmission problems especially in unshielded systems.

The modules' metal cases and their 360-degree shielded meshwork contacts guarantee an effective EMV protection and a constant electrical performance.

Potential equalisation can be realised via 6,3 mm flat jacks attached directly to the modules.

Advantages of shielded cabling systems.

Test measurements prove that only fully shielded Class E cabling systems, that provide the necessary 500 MHz transmission features, can reach the standardised channel lengths of 100 metres.

The same measurements clearly show that with unshielded Class E cabling systems, 10Gbit/s can only be transferred up to a maximum length of 55 metres.

The main problem for 10 Gigabit transmission in copper cables is the so-called Alien Crosstalk, which summarises external electromagnetic interferences.

Using a main focus frequency of around 400 Hz, only 0,0006 V of the 2 V sent originally reaches the receiver.

For a distinct signal interpretation, the receiver needs a fair signal-to-noise-ratio.

As the signal's voltage is very low, any external interfering signals must be eliminated as effectively as possible.

When laying multiple unshielded twisted pair cables (UTP) in one cable duct, the crosstalk between the adjoining cables is very high and cannot be compensated for electronically.

Additionally, data transmission in UTP cabling systems can be influenced negatively by similar frequencies from diverse radio communications such as mobile phones and wireless solutions.

In UTP cables, the interference signals are suppressed via a 40 dB common mode rejection, whereas in shielded twisted pair cables, this value averages 80 dB, as the effect of the shielding adds to the common mode rejection.

Therefore, the suppression of interfering signals in shielded cables surpasses the value of UTP cables 10,000 times.

Shielded Cat.

7 PiMF cables offer the advantage that their electrical properties are specified up to 600 MHz and can be deployed for 10Gbit/s transmissions without any restrictions and over the full 100-metres-distance.

In addition, they show a smaller Delay Skew than UTP cables which means that during 10GBase-T transmissions, where each pair of wires transmits 2,5 Gbit/s, it is important that all signals reach the receiver at the same time.

Training and Cabling System Warranty.

To be able to guarantee full functionality for the company's copper cabling systems and in order to provide costumers with a long-term investment protection, Datwyler Cables offers certification workshops for installers which enable them to pass on the Unilan 20 Year System Warranty to their customers.

The warranty guarantees full functionality of the installed.
