Datwyler supplies tunnel cabling to OHL Group

A Datwyler (UK) product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 16, 2008

Datwyler Cables has installed more than 80 kilometres of halogen-free Pyrofil safety cable in the Vielha Tunnel.

The Vielha Tunnel in Catalonia is one of the most important traffic links between Spain and France, and to the relatively isolated Vall dandacute, Aran (Aran Valley), which was formerly only accessible over mountains more than 2,000m high.

The first Vielha Tunnel opened in 1948.

With its poor ventilation, narrow lanes and tight emergency exits, it soon became known as one of the most dangerous tunnels in Spain.

Although it ultimately carried over 6,000 cars and 700 trucks a day - including many loads of hazardous materials - the infrastructure was never improved.

A new tunnel was desperately needed.

In December 2007, after only five years of construction, Juan Carlos I Tunnel was opened.

It is 5,230m long and runs parallel to the old tunnel, which is now used only as an emergency exit and for transporting hazardous materials.

The new tunnel is equipped with the latest technology and modern safety systems.

The contract for the west section of the tunnel was awarded to the OHL Group.

As an experienced and professional enterprise, OHL uses only reliable, high-quality materials.

The solution by Datwyler Cables was first choice for the tunnel cabling.

A decisive factor was that it meets all requirements of DIN 4102-12, including functional integrity in case of fire.

This is an important aspect of any security system, especially in structures with high-occupancy loads.
