In tests with other plastics modifiers, DuPont Dow Elastomers Engage polyolefin elastomers offered superior performance for the impact modification of polyethylenes and polypropylenes.

The tests were conducted at DuPont Dow's technical research facility in Freeport, USA.

Jean-Marc Imbert, regional marketing manager for DuPont Dow, said, "These tests showed that Engage provides an excellent balance of flow properties, flexural modulus and impact properties.

We found that Engage provided considerable impact improvement versus other commonly used modifiers.

It offers customers enhanced performance for impact modified polyolefins".

Impact modification is the addition of low levels of modifier (5 to 20%) to a polyolefin to improve the impact strength without adversely affecting the flexural modulus or the cost.

Three grades of Engage were included in the DuPont Dow tests.

Among the other impact modifiers tested were EPDM, Reactor TPO, and several ultra-low-density polyethylenes.

The three grades of Engage were 8842 (1.0 melt index, 0.857 density), 8003 (1.0 melt index, 0.885 density), and 8400 (30 melt index, 0.870 density).

For the tests, Engage and other modifiers were blended with a 12 melt index homopolymer PP and 10 melt index HDPE.

Blends were injection moulded into plaques and physical properties obtained.

The three Engage products significantly outperformed other modifiers in low and room temperature impact tests, even at significantly lower levels.
