Leak test system validates its own operation

An Easytest product story

Easytest's Hexteq system detects cracks within five minutes in heat exchangers used to pasteurise products such as milk, beer, water, soft drinks and juice, according to a spokesman.

Now the system has been improved by incorporating a syringe into the system to simulate a leak.

This latest innovation allows the user to "self validate" the system in seconds prior to using it live on a heat exchanger giving additional systems security and eliminating the need for costly and lengthy validation testing which would entail having a heat exchanger with and without a leak.

The Hexteq unit is very small and light enabling "single-person operation".

Training takes one day and once established one person can carry out many tests in one day.

Other methods require plant shutdowns and cumbersome equipment and are costly and time consuming.

The heat exchange testers being marketed by Easytest are used to certify and calibrate liquid food processing equipment and give instant certification and printed graph of the condition of the equipment for quality records.

Most other heat exchanger crack systems require plant to be out of use for up to eight hours, says Sales Director John Watson, who is responsible for marketing the Easytest series of systems.

The old systems also usually require the heat exchanger to be stripped down and painted with dye or gas pressure tested with all the usual environmental and safety concerns involved in this old technology Easytest's Hexteq system takes five minutes and can be carried out when there is liquid under pressure in the heat exchanger.

The testers, which were launched last year, use pressure and ultrasound to detect cracks and pinholes that may be present in a heat exchanger.
