Faster cylinders move more material

An Edbro product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 29, 2006

D Morgan has specified Edbro's latest integrated CX15 tipping cylinders, the lightest and fastest units available for 8 x 4 tippers.

Wirral-based D Morgan is taking delivery of ten new Iveco Trakker 8 x 4's, as part of the continuing expansion of the company's highly successful construction and plant hire business.

Boosting D Morgan's 50-strong fleet, the new vehicles have to cope with mixed use, including general tipper hire work, earthmoving contracts, demolition works, and delivering a mixture of subsoil, rock and recycled materials to customers across the North West.

To help the trucks to meet all these demands, with maximised payloads and tipping speeds, D Morgan has specified Edbro's latest integrated CX15 tipping cylinders, the lightest and fastest units available for 8 x 4 tippers.

D Morgan has been in business for over 50 years and is still expanding thanks to its unique diversified business philosophy.

Not only does the company undertake general tipper work, earthmoving and the like, but it also runs its own quarries and is a big name in construction and recycling.

"Our objective is to be the best professionally in every aspect of our business", said Graham Bailey, who is Workshop Manager for D Morgan.

"We aim to keep one step ahead of our competition in everything that we buy, be it excavators, dozers or trucks".

"We also go further than our competition, in that we operate a highly successful construction business, investing in everything from earthmoving machinery to site engineers and quantity surveyors".

D Morgan's latest investment, the new Iveco trucks, will be in operation 5-days a week, and are expected to cover 80,000 miles per annum.

Importantly, they offer significant payload advantages of 600kg over the previous pre-Cursor 8 Trakker model.

Contributing to this weight saving are the trucks' Boweld aggralite bodies and Edbro tipping gear.

D Morgan has only recently started using Edbro's new integrated CX15 tipping cylinder, which has been designed and developed using the latest finite element analysis techniques.

The result of this is a fully integrated ram and tank design that offers ease of integration for body builders, and weight savings of up to 165kg against competitors' products.

This allows the end user a potential increase in payload: 0.825 tonnes per day on a typical five loads per day schedule, or 198 tonnes extra payload each year.

Although increased payload is a highly important factor for D Morgan, the primary reason for specifying the Edbro CX15 unit was its 20% faster lowering speed.

"We run our own quarries and also clear demolition sites, so we demand the fastest possible turnarounds for our trucks", said Bailey.

"The integrated design of the Edbro tipping cylinders gives us this performance".

In addition to faster lowering speeds, the CX15 design provides a more reliable solution for users, as the hoist control valve is protected from the elements.

Moreover, the integrated design also enables the control valve to provide hose burst protection, which improves safety by preventing the vehicle body from falling should a hose burst.

Finally, the fact that there are no external hydraulic hoses or fittings in this design means that potential downtime, resulting from burst hoses, is avoided.
