Tipping cylinder speeds truck turnarounds

An Edbro product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 20, 2006

Fruehauf is expanding its activities into rigid tipper trucks optimised by Edbro's new, fully integrated ram and tank CX15 tipping cylinder.

Building on its many years of success in the semi-rigid trailer market, Fruehauf is expanding its activities into rigid tipper trucks, initially producing 25 and 35yd3 chassis for aggregate and bulk tipping, respectively.

The new rigid tippers offer the customary Fruehauf benefits of maximised payloads, high strength and durability in a package optimised by Edbro's new, fully integrated ram and tank CX15 tipping cylinder, the lightest and fastest unit available for 8 x 4 tippers.

"We are responding to the demands of the market", said David Tallent of Fruehauf.

"We asked our customers what make of tipping cylinder they preferred and the overwhelming response was Edbro".

"This suits us as a company because we believe that combination of our chassis and the Edbro hoist is the best on the market".

"We have used Edbro's CS range of tipping cylinders for many years on our semi-rigid trailers, and have always found them to be largely fit-and forget units, that offer high strength and require minimum maintenance".

The development of rigid tippers is a natural one for Fruehauf.

The company estimates that it has over 50% of the semi-trailer market due to factors such as understanding the applications and needs of its customers; heavy investment in design; and rigorous production quality standards.

Fruehauf claims more years of tipper design and manufacturing experience than its competitors, and it has the advantage of being able to design both the chassis and body to work as a whole.

The result is a range of trailers, which truly optimise the balance between payload and strength.

The same proven payload/strength equation is now being applied to Fruehauf's new range of rigid tippers; but this time it is optimised by Edbro's fully integrated ram and tank CX15 tipping cylinder - a unit that offers the benefits of lightweight, from a one-piece laser-welded tube construction, faster tipping speeds, increased payloads and fit-and-forget reliability.

Claimed to be the lightest, yet strongest, tipping cylinder for its size on the market, the CX15 is up to 165kg lighter than competing products; and because of its integrated ram and tank design, is much easier to fit.

In addition, the integrated tank design of the CX15 provides users with the benefits of faster lowering speeds with 100 litre/min pumps enabling faster upward tipping for a combined increased in speed of 40% for the fastest possible site turnarounds.

As well as providing lighter weight and faster lowering speeds, the CX15 design and Edbro's unique one-piece cylinder tube construction also provide a more reliable solution for users, as the hoist control valve is protected from the elements.

Moreover, the integrated design also enables the control valve to provide hose burst protection, which improves safety by preventing the vehicle body from falling should a hose burst.

Finally, the fact that there are no external hydraulic hoses or fittings in this design means that potential downtime, resulting from burst hoses, is avoided.
