Battery company makes Bulgarian acquisition

An EnerSys product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 24, 2007

EnerSys' acquisition of Energian provides additional low-cost manufacturing capacity.

EnerSys has recently re-inforced its position in the Eastern European markets with the acquisition in May of Bulgarian battery manufacturer Energia.

"This acquisition is particularly attractive by providing us with greater market penetration in the rapidly growing Eastern European and Russian markets while providing the company with additional low-cost manufacturing capacity", stated John Craig, Chairman, President and CEO of EnerSys.

Energia, located in Targovishte, Bulgaria, is a large-scale production facility focused on motive power products which provide the power source for forklift trucks and electric vehicles.

It also manufactures products for reserve power applications which provide power for telecoms and UPS.

EnerSys plans to make significant investments in new machinery and process management which will rapidly expand production volumes of Energia.

EnerSys has been doing business in Eastern European countries for a number of years with its own sales and service networks in Russia as well as in Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary and Poland and with the support of EnerSys dealers in other Eastern European countries.

EnerSys' Polish plant located in Bielsko Biala, which was acquired in 1999, has been expanded over the past several years and has achieved very high levels of productivity.

With a continuous focus on quality and protection of the environment the plant has become one of the largest production sites for motive power batteries in Europe.

Many Western European customers of EnerSys are making major investments in Eastern Europe with the construction of new logistic platforms, production facilities and distribution centres.

The goal of EnerSys is to support these strategic developments with the supply of batteries, chargers and systems and to directly serve existing customers in these dynamic markets.

With the market growing by 50% in materials handling equipment and batteries over the past year in many of the East European countries, including the Russian Federation, both EnerSys facilities, Bielsko-Biala, Poland and Targovishte, Bulgaria, are ideally located and equipped to meet these needs with a rapid and efficient service.
