European Parliament rejects amendments
The European Parliament has rejected amendments to the Directive on Recognition of Professional Qualifications that would have adversely affected the status and mobility of UK engineers within Europe.
At its session on 11th February 2004, the European Parliament rejected, by votes of over two to one, amendments to the Directive on Recognition of Professional Qualifications which would have adversely affected the status and mobility of UK engineers within Europe Jim Birch, Head of International Recognition at ECUK, said: "We are pleased that the actions ECUK took in the run up to the vote have had a successful outcome and are hopeful that the scale of the rejection means that a discriminatory 'section for engineers' will not be reintroduced at a later stage
ECUK will continue to monitor the situation and use our contacts with UK ministers, the commission and parliamentarians to ensure that the final legislation does not disadvantage the UK".
