Northumbria University's Vice Chancellor Professor Kel Fidler has been confirmed as the new Chairman of the Engineering Council UK.
Northumbria University's Vice Chancellor Professor Kel Fidler has been confirmed as the new Chairman of the Engineering Council UK.
Professor Fidler will serve for three years from 12th May 2005.
Professor Fidler has a wealth of expertise and experience in the field of engineering.
His first degree is in electrical engineering and he studied electronic engineering for his doctoral research.
He served on the Council of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, chairing its Accreditation Committee between 1994 and 1999, and has taken part in many international activities in engineering education.
Professor Fidler said: "This is an opportune time to lead the engineering profession's regulatory authority".
"ECUK has established excellent working relationships with the engineering Institutions and has high credibility internationally and with Government agencies".
"Working with the Engineering Technology Board, I hope to build the standing of registered engineers in the UK and show that this is truly a profession for the 21st century".
The retiring Chairman, Sir Colin Terry, will present the 2004 report and accounts to the AGM on 12th May 2005 as his last act as Chairman.
Professor Fidler paid tribute to Sir Colin's work in establishing ECUK's strong position today.
He said: "We owe a debt of gratitude to Sir Colin for the considerable efforts he has applied to achieving consensus across the profession and building support for the UK-SPEC standard published at the end of 2003".
The Board also elected Dr Trevor Evans, Chief Executive of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, as Deputy Chairman to succeed John Baxter, following the AGM in May.
