Discs guarantee environmental performance

An Elfab product story

Rohm and Haas has installed Elfab Amourgraph graphite bursting discs with Integral Flo-Tel detection during the recent upgrade of its Jarrow facility.

Manufacturer of speciality chemicals Rohm and Haas, in conjunction with engineering partner ABB, has installed Elfab Amourgraph graphite bursting discs with Integral Flo-Tel detection during the recent upgrade of its Jarrow facility.

The Rohm and Haas operation at Jarrow is a top-tier COMAH site, manufacturing biocides and ion exchange resins.

The company is committed to achieving the highest standards of environmental performance and, as it operates close to the centre of Jarrow, is focused on reducing the risk of any release from its plants by maintaining strict levels of operational reliability.

The reason for the switch to Elfab Amourgraph discs was to increase the overall reliability of the burst-detection system and so add higher levels of protection against accidental release.

The new discs alleviate some of the problems normally associated with traditional graphite discs, such as sensitivity to misaligned flanges and over- torque.

The previous burst-detection system used older "paddle" style switches and was in urgent need of upgrade to eradicate spurious alarms, subsequent downtime and to comply with new EU directives, such as ATEX.

Due to the type of process where these discs were being used, graphite was still seen as the most suitable material for the application.

Elfab therefore offered the G3A Amourgraph bursting disc with its steel body construction, and the noninvasive, fully reusable, ATEX Zone 0-approved Integral Flo-Tel detector, which only operates when the disc has ruptured, thereby eliminating the possibility of any false alarm signals.

The Elfab proposal offered the most cost-effective and reliable solution and no detection problems have arisen since installation.

Rohm and Haas is considering upgrading other parts of the plant to use the Integral Flo-Tel detector.
