Bursting disc features in
superconducting magnet
Siemens Magnet Technology enlisted the support of pressure-relief specialist Elfab in developing the OR105 magnet range for use in the core of magnetic resonance imaging body scanners.
Siemens Magnet Technology (SMT), with support from pressure-relief specialist Elfab, has recently developed the OR105 magnet range for use in the core of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) body scanners The new magnet will significantly speed up the scanning process, while ensuring that the experience is more comfortable for patients than that offered by conventional techniques

New bursting disc gives better pressure safety
The new Uni-Guard from Elfab is a scored reverse bursting disc ideal for very low pressure applications in aggressive process environments.
Instant warning of over-pressure in process plant
The Integral Flo-Tel pressure relief sensor developed by Elfab Limited provides instant warning of over-pressure within the pipework and vessels of process plants.
Elfab worked closely with SMT on the development of a new electron-beam-welded bursting disc device for use in the magnet's pressure-relief venting system.
The specification required a low burst pressure, the capability of withstanding a relatively high reverse pressure, and a high degree of leak tightness to prevent any loss of helium.
The superconducting magnet is housed within an insulated pressure vessel which contains liquid helium.
The unit operates by passing an electric current through wire windings at a temperature of 4.2K to create a magnetic field.
This causes the resistance in the wire to drop to almost zero, dramatically reducing the system's electrical requirements.
The unit can then easily generate fields of up to 1.5T, which makes for very high-quality imaging.
Elfab proposed the recently introduced Opti-Gard bursting disc for this demanding application.
This unique design offers state-of-the-art, nonfragmenting, reverse-acting disc technology that operates at pressures not previously available with solid metal discs.
Elfab designed and manufactured a bursting disc device which met all of SMT's product requirements and is now a standard feature on OR105 magnets.
As a result of the successful launch of the new magnet, and the subsequent increase in the production schedule, SMT is now establishing long-term supply agreements with key suppliers.
Elfab has been selected as a supply partner for all bursting discs, based on key measures such as product quality, on-time delivery and technical capability.
