Bursting discs go green

An Elfab product story

Elfab is the first and only bursting disc manufacturer to have developed an environmentally friendly graphite bursting disc.

Elfab is the first and only bursting disc manufacturer to have developed an environmentally friendly graphite bursting disc.

A unique impregnation process has enabled the company to replace the dangerous phenolic- and furane-based resins that have traditionally been used within the bursting-disc industry; the industry has long been aware of the toxic, and potentially carcinogenic, properties of both of these resins.

Elfab's new methacrylate-based system has been trialled and field-tested for over six months, during which time the new product's performance has exceeded traditionally impregnated graphite.

One of the reasons for the trials' success is that the final lacquer layer applied to the disc is identical to the one used previously, ensuring that the disc surface in contact with the process medium remains unchanged.

Commenting on the revised production method, Russell Trotter, Elfab's Operations Director, said: "There are benefits in this process change for everyone involved".

"Elfab has been able to remove a potentially dangerous and environmentally harmful process from our manufacturing operation, while our customers now benefit from an environmentally sound product which outperforms traditionally impregnated graphite".

Graphite bursting discs are used in many industry sectors, particularly the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and are typically found in processes involving valveless vessels; highly corrosive processes; low-cost processes featuring low-cost protection devices; and processes where fragmentation is not an issue.
