Working collaboratively, a BP and Emerson team developed the world's first intrinsically safe mote-based system to capture valuable measurements in BP's challenging refinery environments.

BP has presented its Digital and Communications Technology (DCT) Helios awards to BP teams that collaborated with Emerson to develop innovative wireless technology BP's internal DCT Helios Award Programme is designed to recognise the very best digital technology projects that add extraordinary value to BP's operations, and the communities it operates in, around the world

The DCT Helios award in the Performance category was presented for wireless innovation at BP's Cherry Point refinery in Washington State, USA.

To operate safely and efficiently, refineries, plants and platforms need data on factors such as temperature, pressure and vibration of equipment.

Working collaboratively, the BP and Emerson team developed the world's first intrinsically safe mote-based system to capture valuable measurements in BP's challenging refinery environments.

Motes are sensors with built-in power, memory and communications ability that can gather a vast amount of sensory input and communicate it over a self configuring wireless network.

The wireless system significantly reduces the cost of installing sensors, enabling increased monitoring to improve maintenance and safety.

BP also presented a team with its DCT Helios award in the Green category for wireless monitoring of relief valves at the company's Carson refinery in California, USA, demonstrating the efforts of BP people to strengthen and sustain environmental leadership.

"The new wireless technology enabled us to do things we simply could not do before, either because of cost or physical wiring obstacles", said David Lafferty, Senior Consultant with BP's Chief Technology Office in Digital and Communications Technology.

"We partnered with Emerson on Carson and Cherry Point field trials that were a win-win for both companies".

"Our BP teams gained experience in exploiting this new technology for business value, and Emerson gained a real-world environment for valuable testing and feedback on their technology".

"We are honoured to be named with BP's own people for recognition by the DCT Helios Award Programme", said John Berra, President of Emerson Process Management.

"These awards represent the innovation and real business value of smart wireless technology that Emerson is currently introducing for mainstream in-plant applications; furthermore, the awards represent a successful technology development partnership with BP that we believe is an ideal model for shaping and validating new technology like wireless".
