Two of the world's leading sound and vibration specialist engineering companies will cohost their first sound and vibration technical symposium on 20th-21st May 2003 at the Heritage Motor Centre.

Two of the world's leading sound and vibration specialist engineering companies, Bruel and Kjaer UK and Endevco, will cohost their first sound and vibration technical symposium on 20th-21st May 2003 at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire.

The event will feature a couple of two-day seminars.

One seminar will address the principles of acoustics while the other seminar examines the principles of vibration.

A series of application-focused workshops will also support the event.

The workshop topics include automotive, modal analysis, sound power as well as transducers and conditioning.

Another workshop will examine how to maximise the potential of the Pulse Platform multi-analyser system.

The symposium and workshops are focused at engineers and technicians looking to improve their theoretical and practical knowledge of acoustics and vibration technologies.

The whole event will feature hands-on training with state-of-the-art instrumentation.

A key foundation of the symposium is a two-day seminar entitled "Principles of acoustics" that will provide a thorough grounding for anyone new to the fields of sound, noise and acoustic measurements.

The seminar will teach delegates how to perform a range of noise measurements and correctly set up measuring instruments or assess noise reports.

Running in parallel is another two-day seminar.

Entitled "Principles of vibration", the seminar focuses on how vibration analysis techniques can be used to improve the reliability, performance and quality control of rotating equipment.

The seminar covers the following topics: terminology; measuring units; time domain; filters; integration; vibration analysis techniques.

A key ingredient in the symposium is the series of practical workshops that run throughout the programme.

The automotive workshop addresses advanced measurement techniques and products of special interest to the automotive industry such as NVH testing, external vehicle noise engineering (field pass by, in-door pass by, beamforming) and advanced acoustical noise source location techniques (STSF, real-time holography).

The modal analysis workshop features topics including measurement and instrumentation using the Bruel and Kjaer data acquisition system Pulse, and the total integration of curvefitting techniques using ME'scope and operational modal analysis.

The hands-on workshop will teach about impact testing, modal instrumentation and analysis.

The sound power workshop is ideal for engineers and technicians seeking an overview of sound power techniques.

The workshop covers the basics of sound power calculation and the international standard used to make these measurements.

Sound power determination using sound intensity and sound pressure in a free field and pressure in a reverberation field will also be examined.

The transducer and conditioning workshop covers transducer technologies, cabling source errors, mounting considerations, 'smart' TEDS transducers and signal conditioning equipment.

The workshop addresses all aspects of accelerometer use including high temperature integral electronics and associated cabling.

The Pulse Platform workshop covers the most important features and properties of the new Pulse 7.0 multi-analysis system, including beamforming, Pulse Data Manager, Pulse Time File Management as well as an overview of dedicated Pulse applications.
