Alliance to further NVH simulation

A Bruel and Kjaer product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 7, 2005

Bruel and Kjaer Sound and Vibration Measurement has signed an exclusive contract with NoViSim to jointly complete the ongoing development of the next generation of NVH simulator products.

Bruel and Kjaer Sound and Vibration Measurement has signed an exclusive contract with NoViSim of Millbrook, Bedfordshire to jointly complete the ongoing development of the next generation of NVH simulator products to be sold and supported by Bruel and Kjaer as integrated tools in the Bruel and Kjaer Pulse data acquisition platform, claimed to be the number one Windows-based NVH test platform.

Pulse systems are scalable from one to more than 200 channels with a full range of options and applications.

Pulse front-ends can be stacked to raise channel counts or used separately to gain flexibility, measure from DC up to 200kHz, run multiple analyses (such as FFT, order and1/n-octave) in parallel, and in real time, or use Bruel and Kjaer's advanced data-handling tools to analyse recorded time data.

The NVH simulator represents an engineering tool that accurately recreates the noise and vibration of a vehicle in a user interactive environment.

The NVH simulator consists of a complete vehicle situated in front of a projection screen, on which a virtual visual scenario is projected.

The user sits in the vehicle and experiences the sounds and vibrations of the car being assessed as they "drive" the vehicle through the virtual scenario.

The simulator responds to the driver's input by synthesising and reproducing the correct sound and vibration for the instantaneous vehicle parameters, which are presented in conjunction with a representative visual scenario.

As in a real vehicle, the stimuli are affected by changes in road surface, vehicle speed, engine speed and throttle position.

"The NVH simulator is a key element in helping automotive customers reduce time to market by allowing them to experience the NVH of a vehicle component in a complete vehicle in the correct context", says Torben G Nielsen, Bruel and Kjaer's Business Manager Automotive.

"So critical decisions can be made early in the development programme before any physical prototype has been built".

Bruel and Kjaer is a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of sound and vibration solutions.

The company has more than 60 years of experience in a wide range of applications for the automotive, aerospace, industrial and environmental markets.

NoViSim was recently formed to produce NVH simulator products, based on the knowledge and experience of the founding partner companies, Sound and Vibration Technology, VRtainment and Triton Audio Solutions, a partnership with consulting and software development expertise in advanced NVH, driving simulators and audio signal processing.

These products will be fully integrated into the NVH processes of today's and tomorrow's automotive industry.
