Sound software receives Vista upgrade

A Bruel and Kjaer product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 2, 2007

An update to Bruel and Kjaer's sound meter software packages allows users to take advantage of Microsoft's Vista operating system.

Bruel and Kjaer, has added Windows Vista compatibility to its sound meter software packages and added a new application allowing users to make vibration measurements on the 2250 handheld meter.

The software packages update allows users to take full advantage of Microsoft's enhanced operating system, Windows Vista, when analysing, reporting or archiving the data downloaded from the meter onto PC or laptop.

These updates are free for Bruel and Kjaer's customers with current licences and available to download on the website.

The new vibration application - Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) - has been created for Bruel and Kjaer's 2250 meter to perform frequency analysis and diagnostics measurements for high-precision noise and vibration testing in areas such as occupational, residential and industrial areas.

To use the new FFT application, 2250 owners just add the software to their meter and - together with an accelerometer - start making vibration measurements.

The FFT application can also be used with the 2250's standard microphone for narrow-band measurements of sound.

FFT is a digital signal processing technique that converts a time record into a narrow-band, constant-bandwidth filtered spectrum.

The measurement is defined by specifying a frequency span and a number of lines (or filters).

The recorded FFT is displayed by as many as 6400 data lines on the meter's screen, which the user can select individually and expand to view the details.

The analysis FFT provides is ideal for assisting product development, quality control, building vibration analysis, troubleshooting on machinery and automotive component analysis.
