The use of sound, video, animation and intelligent interactivity can provide a very powerful method of communication or training for engineers, says Gary Molton of Engineering Adventures

It has sometimes been said that the Internet will not replace traditional magazines because the medium is not so easy or pleasant to use.

While there may be some truth in this for static text pages the arrival of increased bandwidth will soon change everything.

We can see with multimedia CD-ROMs that the use of sound, video, animation and intelligent interactivity can provide a very powerful method of communication or training for engineers.

In the future we will not simply read about a company's new tractor but will be able to drive a simulation of it on our computer screens, direct from the electronic magazine.

As a sample of what is to come you can try the following program that will allow you to experiment with a range of different hydraulic piston pump controls.

Simply click www.engineeringweb.co.uk/training/download/pistpump.exe to download the program.

Other examples and further information can be found on the Engineering Adventures web site.
