Any aqueous solution can become supersaturated, which means that they contain higher concentrations of dissolved solute than their equilibrium concentration.

Such solutions are not stable and are easily triggered into dropping back to saturation level, forcing the dissolved compound to precipitate.

The direct effect of the ParaDox unit is on the nucleation process through the creation of new nucleation sites within the bulk fluid flow.

Crystal growth then occurs at these points of nucleation and not at the pipewall.

Suspended solids increase with a corresponding drop in the level of supersaturation, and these effects have been observed in the field.

In field trials ParaDox has proved successful in treating a variety of effluent problems: ParaDox has been successful in treating scale build-up in pipework and disinfecting tanks resulting from the sodium hydroxide dosing used to increase the pH in wastewater.

This action causes the precipitation of calcium salts leading to hard scale.

ParaDox has successfully treated scale constricts in pipework, pump impellers, filter cloths and filter presses following the chemical treatment of effluent with lime and other compounds before passing to the on-site effluent treatment plant.

Because such effluent contains large amounts of calcium hydroxide and carbonate the effluent causes considerable amounts of fouling and scaling.

Some paper companies' process water contains large amounts of salts (carbonates, oxalates and silicates of calcium/magnesium/aluminium) and other soluble materials and chemicals.

Paradox has resolved the problems of severe scaling caused by these salts within pipework, control valves, and pressure screens, as well as one of the most problematical areas, disc filters, where the build-up of scale results in a lack of hydraulic pull-through.

Field trials are continuing on other effluents and ETC has is currently working in association with a major water company on other possible effluent applications.

Commenting, John Thompson, Managing Director, ETC says: "With Government regulations demanding the tightest possible controls on the discharge of effluent, many companies are having to use chemicals to treat processed water which is leading to fouling in plant and pipelines.

The ParaDox has been especially developed for these particular applications which will help industry save time and money on shutdown, chemicals and labour".
