Three engineering companies have scooped Envirowise Awards for Environmental Excellence in Supply Chain Efficiency.

Three engineering companies have scooped Envirowise Awards for Environmental Excellence in Supply Chain Efficiency.

Motherwell-based Terex Equipment, GE Caledonian, Prestwick and Dana Glacier Vandervell Bearings, Kilmarnock were presented with their awards by First Minister Jack McConnell at the Annual Scottish Engineering Dinner on 11th May 2006 in recognition of their outstanding contribution as part of an Envirowise Engineering Supply Chain Project.

The project, which took place in Scotland, helped the firms identify cost savings and improve their environmental credentials, through eliminating unnecessary waste.

These three host companies each worked with between 20 and 30 suppliers to identify total potential cost savings for the project of more than GBP 300,000 by improving water efficiency and better use of resources throughout the supply chains.

Drew Poulton, Plant Engineer at Motherwell-based Terex Equipment, said: "To win an award as recognition of our participation in this initiative is fantastic".

"We have established a baseline and now plan to continue waste minimisation".

"The natural byproduct of this initiative is that we are contributing to a better environment.

"The programme has also allowed us to pass on best practice to other companies".

"With help from Envirowise we were able to look at ourselves and our suppliers in terms of waste at source, and it has allowed each of us to put measures in place to reduce our waste and costs".

Commenting on winning the Award, Scott Duncan, Environmental, Health and Safety officer of Prestwick-based GE Caledonian said: "Our future plans are to sustain the changes that we have made and pursue a lower environmental impact in all that we do from energy use, waste management, water use and C02 emissions".

"We are absolutely delighted to receive this award in recognition of our efforts to manage resources more efficiently and thus reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain".

Envirowise offers all UK businesses free and confidential advice to help them save money and reduce their environmental impact by becoming more resource efficient.

Dr Martin Gibson, Envirowise Programme Director, said: "Envirowise can provide the practical tools and specialised knowledge necessary to help businesses right across the engineering sector address resource efficiency by reducing unnecessary business waste".

"Taking action can not only help reduce environmental impact, but also identify opportunities to become more cost effective, competitive and profitable".
