The European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) held its 11th General Assembly and Management Seminar in Lindau, Germany, in mid-May 2000, attended by some 70 members and guests.

Dr Lothar Albano-Mueller, president, welcomed participants and paid particular thanks to the ZF Management which hosted a technical visit to the company's truck transmission plant and also ZF's main research centre in nearby Friedrichshafen.

Dr Albano-Mueller said that whilst the 10th General Assembly held in Chester in May 1999 presented the many achievements of the EPMA in its first 10 years, the association now had to look to the future.

PM, he said, is still a very young and dynamic technology enjoying economic prosperity as underlined by growth of some 80% in PM component production over the past 6 years.

He further stated that whilst PM has already achieved a great deal there are still many ideas triggering new developments for the future.

The EPMA's General Assemblies give members an opportunity to discuss these new developments, and to review the ongoing activities of the association.

Key presentations at the Lindau Management Seminar included a review of PM production in Germany by Professor Paul Beiss (TU Aachen, Germany), the present status of sintered components in transmissions by Dr Stefan Hock (ZF Friedrichshafen), a global review of PM market trends by Bernard Williams (EPMA), and two presentations on the development and impact of e-commerce on the automotive supply chain by Eberhard Stotko (European Automotive Initiative Group, Munich) and Nigel Foster (The Real Commerce Company, UK).

It was also announced at the 11th General Assembly that Bernard Williams, Executive Director of the association since the establishment of the EPMA Secretariat at the beginning of 1990, will leave the association towards the end of 2000.

Dr Albano-Mueller informed members that a successor is now being sought.
