The European Powder Metallurgy Association General Assembly and Management Seminar was held 18th-19th April in the delightful setting of the Quinta da Marinha Hotel on the Atlantic Coast near Lisbon, Portugal Over a three day period, meetings of the EPMA Board, Council and various committees took place with over 70 people attending, some of whom took advantage of the sports facilities or visited the historic region in and around Lisbon

President Cesar Molins reviewed the previous twelve months saying that it had been a "mixed year" for the European PM industry.

The market slowdown in USA, and to a lesser extent Europe, had adversely affected many companies.

However, the overall volume of sales for ferrous PM products had fallen only slightly, by less than 2%.

Despite the external economic environment the EPMA itself had a successful year with both the PM2001 exhibition in Nice and its Summer school in San Sebastian being well attended and producing positive reactions from the participants.

Satellite meetings of the various EPMA working groups and networks were held to coincide with the event, and updates on their many activities were presented to the Assembly.

Delegates at the Management Seminar heard a number of leading edge papers from a range of speakers including 'Developments in the automotive supply chain' by Eng Octavio Carmo Costa (VW AutoEuropa); a review of PM production in Portugal by Manuel Valente (Durit Metalurgia); an update on the current status of nanopowder and nanotechnology by Dr Olle Grinder (PM Technology); and a presentation on the far-reaching effects of the EU New Chemicals Policy by Mike Morley (Consultant, UK).

VW AutoEuropa also kindly hosted a tour of the facilities at their plant in Lisbon for participants at the seminar.

Copies of the 2001 Annual Report of the EPMA are available on request.
