The 14th annual EPMA Awards took place at the Euro PM2006 Congress and Exhibition, helping to showcase the PM industry's innovation and excellence.

For the past 13 years the annual awards have promoted innovation within the PM industry.

A change of format after the Euro PM2005 event, has seen the 2006 EPMA Awards for Excellence in Powder Metallurgy encourage excellence as well as innovation, which in turn has helped to foster and encourage the number of participants at this year's event.

The 2006 EPMA Awards for Excellence in Powder Metallurgy, sponsored by Metal Powder Report, has been another difficult year for the judges to decide on.

The level of quality from all the entrants has been raised once again, as the competition has attracted components from many industry-leading companies, such as MG Minigears, last year's winner OBE, and Alliance, to name but a few.

In a change to the event format, the awards presentation was combined with the opening plenary presentation, presided by this year's Chairmen Philippe Gundermann, Eurotungstene Metal Powders, d'Jeff van der Ven, ITB Precisietechniek, with the awards being presented by the EPMA's President Dr Cesar Mollins.

Due to the high standard of entries the judges decided to jointly award the "highly commended" accolades between two deserving companies and products, Ames, Spain, for its journal bearing and to GKN Sinter Metals, Germany, for its shock absorber piston.

The highly coveted Award of Merit went to Hilti, Liechtenstein and Ceratizit of Luxembourg for their TE-C3X drill bit.

The judges established that the TE-C3X drill bit should take first prise due to the TE-C3X being the world's first truly mass-produced, functionally graded hard-metal part, which, most importantly for the customer, has substantially improved the performance - speed and lifetime - and robustness of the TE-3CX drill bit.

Within the awards presentation Executive Director of the EPMA, Jonathan Wroe said: "I would like to thank the parts makers for sending in their entries to this year's competition and the panel of judges, who took the time to assess each and every entry".

Profiles of this year's featured parts and further technical data are available in hard copy and will be available shortly in electronic format from the EPMA website.
