The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has launched a call for project proposals as part of a Eur 4 million funding scheme to encourage higher safety and health standards in Europe's SMEs.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has launched a call for project proposals as part of a Eur 4 million funding scheme to encourage higher safety and health standards in Europe's small and medium-sized enterprises.

The agency will provide some 40 grants of between Eur 25,000 and Eur 200,000 to cofinance national and transnational/European projects that promote the development and exchange of effective good practice among SMEs.

Applications for cofunding can either be submitted by small businesses themselves or be aimed at SMEs' specific needs in one of three categories: training activities; information and communication on risks and prevention; and provision of effective good practices.

The Agency's director, Hans-Horst Konkolewsky commented: "SMEs employ more than 65% of the EU's workforce, but many have only limited safety and health knowledge and capacity.

We are looking for innovative proposals that can make a real difference in reducing safety and health risks in a sector which is vital for Europe's economic growth".

Full details of the call, technical specifications and application form, in all EU official languages, are available on the agency's website.

The deadlines for applications are 14th June 2002 for national projects and 28th June 2002 for European/transnational projects.

In 2001, 51 projects were selected from more than 400 applications to receive grants to develop accident prevention projects for small businesses.

These ranged from initiatives to improve safety on fishing vessels to an accident awareness campaign for butchers.
