Separating non-ferrous metals from granulated PVC

An Eriez Magnetics Europe product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 10, 2001

At the recent K-2001 event, the Eriez SR Eddy Current Separator, with a design specifically for plastics recycling, was on show at a major plastics and rubber exhibition for the first time

The recent K-2001 was an unprecedented success for first-time exhibitor Eriez Magnetics Europe Ltd.

The first order from the show has been secured for an Eriez Pulseparator 100, a totally new addition to the Pulseparator range.

The Pulseparator is a low height, compact metal separator used to detect and eject at high speed all types of metal, including non-ferrous and stainless steel, from granular products in free-fall.

It is unique in that it can handle damp granules which normally cause other competitor models to false-trip.

Further orders for this type of metal separator are in the pipeline and are expected to be completed over the coming weeks.

Over 200 enquiries were taken at the Eriez stand, of which 50% were from companies located in the EU and a further 42% from outside Europe.

The Eriez SR Eddy Current Separator (ECS), with a unique and innovative design specifically for plastics recycling, was on show at a major international plastics and rubber exhibition for the first time and attracted a huge volume of interest.

There were live demonstrations to show how effective this unit is in separating aluminium and similar non-ferrous metals from granulated PVC.

The development and launch of the Eriez SR ECS has been in response to a growing need in the plastics and rubber recycling industry for a system for enhanced separation of non-ferrous metals from granulated plastic and rubber.

This technology has proven very successful and many units have already been sold to plastics recycling companies throughout Europe, especially in the UK for the removal of self-tapping screws from UPVC window profiles.

The SR ECS is commonly sold as part of a modular recycling system.

This system would incorporate a 2 stage ferrous magnetic separator (ferrite and Rare Earth Roll) to initially remove coarse and fine ferrous contamination, a dual stage Eddy Current Separator to remove the non-ferrous elements and then as an optional extra a Pulseparator unit to be installed after the Eddy Current Separator to perform a final quality check on the recycled polymer.

The operation of a Metalarm 6500 metal detector mounted on a conveyor section also attracted many companies who presently have a metal contamination problem.

This type of detector is extensively used by plastics and rubber processors to detect the presence of all types of metal, including stainless steel, in material being fed to granulators.

Eriez are keen to strengthen their coverage of the global plastics market in line with their strong representation in other process industries.

The show was therefore very useful from the point of view of identifying potential agents and distributors.

Several new agents are to be appointed over the coming months as a direct result of the exhibition.
