Magnets attract Chinese coal giant

An Eriez Magnetics Europe product story

Shenhua Coal Trading Company has ordered six Eriez SSE suspended superconducting electromagnets worth approximately US $5 million, constituting one of the biggest single orders in Eriez's history.

Shenhua Coal Trading Company, established only 10 years ago and now the number one in the Chinese coal market, recently placed an order for six Eriez SSE suspended superconducting electromagnets worth approximately US $5 million, constituting one of the biggest single orders in Eriez's history.

Shenhua's ambition is to become the world's number one supplier by the year 2010.

An important part of realising this goal is to achieve "zero impurity" in coal exports.

To this end, Eriez was invited in July 2004 to participate in the bidding to supply a magnet which would meet their stringent separation requirements.

Serious competition was encountered, but Eriez fought through on the professionalism of field sales staff and the combined team efforts of the Eriez affiliate network, including Eriez Group President and CEO Tim Shuttleworth; Dr Kou, Managing Director Eriez East Asia; Andy Lewis, Managing Director, Miles Disbrey and Michael Jamieson of the Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) at Eriez-Europe.

The order will require that three Eriez affiliates work closely together: Eriez-Europe to manufacture the six SSE magnets, meet the strict delivery schedule and conduct the on-site commissioning and training; Eriez-China to locally purchase the accessory parts, install the magnets, manage the on-site commissioning and provide after-sales service; and Eriez-USA to provide the project management and oversee the financial risk.

This order follows the successful installation of the world's first SSE magnet at China National Coal's Qingdao branch a few years earlier.

The SSE magnet was installed over a conveyor to attract and remove smaller and less magnetic ferrous metal contaminants, such as detonating caps, embedded within the coal burden.

The SSE, which incorporates the latest cryogenic superconducting technology into a superconducting magnet system, was the brainchild of Dr Adam Stadtmuller, who invested many years in researching and testing the concept to make it a commercial reality at Eriez European headquarters.

The SSE has twice the strength of the most powerful conventional electromagnet ever produced for commercial purposes.

And once ramped up the SSE requires only a trickle of power to maintain its very high magnetic field.

This results in a significantly enhanced separation performance, particularly over high capacity conveyors, which is not possible on conventional suspended electromagnets.

The commercial benefits of superior iron separation include improved end product value and increased productivity, since damage caused by contamination can result in serious downtime problems.
