Circuit breakers help put Team Bullimore on course

An E-T-A Circuit Breakers product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 19, 2005

When round the world yachtsman Tony Bullimore refitted his catamaran with the latest navigation and communication aids, he included E-T-A panel-mounted circuit breakers with water ingress protection.

Round the world yachtsman Tony Bullimore is skippering Team Bullimore in his catamaran, Daedalus, in the Oryx Quest 2005 race.

Bullimore and his seven-man crew spent two months refitting the state-of-the-art carbon wing mast yacht, renewing sails and rigging, and equipped her with the latest navigation and communication aids.

Protecting this vital electronic equipment and all the electrical circuits are a large number of E-T-A panel-mounted circuit breakers with water ingress protection.

The E-T-A 2-5700-DD single pole thermal circuit breaker, supplied for Daedalus, is a threadneck, panel mounted version widely used in the marine market.

Suitable for equipment protection and low voltage wiring protection, it features a push-to-reset/push-to-release button, and incorporates a tease-free, trip-free, snap action mechanism.

It is approved to CBE standard EN60934 (IEC60934).

The optional circuit breaker covers used on the boat offer protection against water ingress to IP64.

"The whole team has done a remarkable job", said Bullimore.

"The 'Big Cat' has never been this well prepared before".

"We have reduced the boat's overall weight by a massive 1.2ts which will make her much more competitive, especially in lighter winds".

"We have put together a top-class crew and all believe that we stand a better than ever chance of winning the $1million prize money".

The Oryx Quest 2005 is the world's premier non-stop around the world sailing race starting and finishing in the Middle East, expected to last about 50 days.

Team Bullimore is one of four crews chasing a $1million prize in this first ever HSBC-sponsored global yacht race to start and finish in the Arabian Gulf.

The 33,800km race takes the fleet down the Indian Ocean into the Southern Ocean and around the five great capes of Australia, New Zealand, South America and South Africa before returning to the oil state of Qatar, in what will undoubtedly be a new world record time for any circumnavigation.

Daedalus won the Multihull Class in the 2004 Fastnet Race and the 2005 Middle Sea Race in the Mediterranean.

Daedalus also set two North Atlantic Records in 2003.

Tony Bullimore is one of the world's best-known yachtsmen spanning three decades.

He has sailed more than 480,000km across the oceans of the world with 145,000 of them covering tough transatlantic races.
