Compact circuit breaker saves rail space

An E-T-A Circuit Breakers product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 3, 2008

The toggle-action E-T-A 4220 circuit breaker has been designed for one and two-phase applications for rated voltages of 240V AC and 120V AC, three-phase up to 415V AC and DC applications up to 80V.

E-T-A Circuit Breakers has introduced a new rail-mountable, thermal-magnetic circuit breaker for the overcurrent protection of loads and their supply cables in plant and process control systems.

It enables failures to be detected without delay to prevent personal injury as well as machinery damage.

Its width of 12.5mm gives it a competitive edge over standard products, which typically have widths of 17 or 22.5mm, enabling maximum exploitation of available space on a rail.

The toggle-action E-T-A 4220 circuit breaker has been designed for one and two-phase applications for rated voltages of 240V AC and 120V AC, three-phase up to 415V AC and for DC applications up to 80V.

The single-pole version of the E-T-A 4220 is available with current ratings from 0.1 to 32A and with five different trip characteristics.

This range ensures precise matching for the application to manage different start-up or continuous loads and to cater for the size of cable cross section.

Spurious disconnections, stoppages and downtimes are minimised.

Two or three-pole applications, individual poles with different ratings and different characteristics can be combined, offering a real competitive edge.

The type 4220 is offered with optional, integral auxiliary contacts (a make or break contact with physical isolation).

This can signal circuit disconnection to a PLC, which will ensure rapid trouble shooting.

As well as being able to wire the signal contacts individually, they can be interconnected quickly in parallel using a plug-in busbar (break contact).

Small jumpers offer another connection possibility: they bridge two poles which are thus connected in series.

The 4220's offers a high rupture capacity, relative to its small width.

Under test conditions, it reaches a short circuit interrupting capacity of 6000A to EN 60934 and 5000A to UL 489.

A sophisticated, plug-in type, power distribution busbar system for single pole line entry is also available.

Two plastic slides at the side of the housing, which may be taken off if required, provide protection against brush contact during installation, normal operation and maintenance.
